Final day tomorrow at the Vinegar Lane Gallery in Ponsonby Auckland, Murray Grimsdale a former colleague from Ilam Art School days of the 1960’s in Christchurch, an iconic artist / illustrator who mainly worked for advertising & book publishing to support his art. Was greatly influenced by Russel Clark a senior tutor at Ilam, book illustrator & war artist of real national significance. This small survey of Grimsdale’s work is must see but unfortunately Saturday is the last day of the exhibition.

“Big Twister” 1970, another early 1970’s work that was culled which I regret now.
It was a large canvas 52” x 72” (about 1.3M x 1.8M) and the 2nd image is the painting out & ready to be delivered to the gallery for exhibition. Those living in NZ & Australia at that time will remember the classic Holden Kingswood station wagon- a great family car with a large boot, good for artwork & kids🤭. #nzabstractart #shapedpainting #roygoodart.nz by @roygoodartnz

Oh those were the days - a group show of emerging artists from the Barry Lett Gallery, a pioneering dealer in Auckland at the time & only one of four contemporary galleries that existed in the city in the early 1970’s. The rather interesting thing is that a dealer gallery travelling the exhibition to a public gallery in another city was rare.
The five artists & one printmaker included: Roy Good / Richard Killeen / David Mealing / John Nichol / Geoffrey Tune / Denys Watkins. The painting illustrated is titled “Bird Ensign” 1970, one of my early attempts at emblematic abstraction. It doesn’t exist any more and this work is a digital Giclee print from a photo of the original reproduced at the original size, 1M x 1M square.

Came across an old quote of the minimal master, Sol Le Witt:
“The total of one’s work creates its own philosophy. It emerges from work to work, good & bad, finding its own dimensions.
The total of all past work exerts its influence on the new work.
The new work combines the reality of the old & destroys the idea in which it was conceived.
It cannot be understood except in context of the other work.” @sol.lewitt.art by @roygoodartnz

Another work from the past - “Maungawhau” 1986/2026 68 x 93cm acrylic & varnish on gesso ground. It’s been recently given a ‘makeover’ as it hadn’t been fully realised or finished. Aucklanders know it as Mt Eden which is one of the extinct volcanic cones that exist within the city parameters. It’s important to me as when I came to Auckland in 1966 from Christchurch I rented a flat that ‘sat’ on the lower side of the mountain.
It had a dramatic effect on the boy from the flat Canterbury plains, the recall of which is embedded in my memory. The scale should have been more like 4M wide to convey the full dramatic effect this mountain has. #roygoodartnz #nzabstractart #shapedabstraction by @roygoodartnz

The recent passing of another NZ art legend, this time in the print media. Barry Cleavin began his career at Ilam School of Fine Art in 1963. Printmaking hadn’t been established at the school at this stage but Barry and several other students convinced a tutor who had experience in that area to start up a studio. Barry was a natural for this medium & pioneered the craft of etching to a level that hadn’t been practised before in NZ. A number of students in that class swapped works in our graduate year & I was lucky to acquire two of his earliest works. The third image is a mature work illustrated in the book Lateral Inversion, published by Canterbury University in 2013, a must read for every artist serious about this field of art. He exhibited internationally winning awards & medals for his work. #ilamschooloffineart #barrycleavin #nzart by @roygoodartnz

Sad news, an elder statesman in the Auckland fine arts community with the very recent passing of Alberto Garcia-Alvarez. A notable artist & teacher at Elam School of Art following art careers beginning in Spain, his place of birth then subsequently California and New Zealand. He was a legend with many of his students bringing an internationalism to the South Pacific and an innate understanding of what it was to be an artist in the 20th Century. Alberto had recently celebrated his 98th birthday. Much sympathy to his family. R.I.P Alberto. Work illustrated: The Crossings series, early 1970’s. by @roygoodartnz

The late John Coley, a legend in NZ for his support & dicovery of this country’s art talent. These two works from 1967 & early 1970 demonstrate his pioneering efforts to explore the optical art movement emerging in the UK & Europe through the endeavours of Riley, Vasarely & others. So lucky to own these works in memory of our friendship in his later years. R.I.P. John #opticalarts #canterburyschooloffineart #roygoodcollection by @roygoodartnz

JOHN DRAWBRIDGE “Aurora” 1970, oil on canvas on board 1.7M x 2.7M. Originally an IBM mural commissioned by AMP. One of NZ’s leading pioneer abstractionists, best known for his vast kinetic mural in Parliament Buildings, this breathtaking work is worth checking out, no ‘spray job’ here but a painstaking pointillist application technique that is staggering in scale. Needs to be seen in the flesh & currently displayed in Webbs’ “Works of Art” auction in Auckland. #nzabstraction #pioneerartist #muralart @webbsauctions by @roygoodartnz

Opened today @ Te Uru Gallery Titirangi, a dual show from Jamie Te Heu Heu and Gina Chin, two different approaches to abstraction but linked by the artists’ all over’ applications of paint. The contrasts achieved by Te Hue Heu Heu’s promotion of regular arching stripes that set up an optical rhythm of pigment while Chin’s graphic flatness creates an optical pattern of all-over structure. This exhibition is a wonderful promise for future top order abstraction in an art scene that is still dominated by figuration and landscape storytelling.

This exhibition that opened this evening at the Arthouse Trust - Pah Homestead, introduces Sefton Rani’s work in a public space. Curated by Dina Jezdic the ground floor galleries are literally dominated by Rani’s recent & major works, the scale and materials of which are manipulated & coerced into new & original surfaces and stunningly presented. It’s an ‘other worldly’ experience with a soundtrack to match where the industrial materials become art statements in their own right. #arthousetrust #seftonraniartist #industrialabstraction @seftonranistudio by @roygoodartnz
