📚What a pleasure it was to immerse myself in all things Iris Cushing - @irismarble - poet, scholar, publisher.

We talked about deep time, what it was like to hang with the feminist Beat poets, and how in-person readings are revolutionary.

There are also some very fancy slot car racing moves featured.👌

🙏Thanks to the startlingly multitalented photographer and musician Jonathan Kane - @jkanefeb - for beautiful portraits of the poetess and the lush landscape here.

My great gratitude to the brilliant mind and talented designer Bill Hovard, the One-Man-Publishing-Marvel behind The Findery: @finderyguide

NYC publishing, writerly peeps! Don’t miss this early bookish issue! I’m pretty sure you can get a copy at @casamagazinesnyc by @rozfoster

Inspired by Emily Helck, owner of The Lost Bookshop - @lostbookshopny - Hazel has learned to read.

My thanks to the One-Man-Publishing-Marvel, Bill Hovard, whose issue 4 of @finderyguide on Bookstores and Literary Connections, along with the talented photographer Jason Martin - @omnoculus - both contributed to Hazel’s miraculous literacy.

She *really* wanted to read this issue.

I’m teaching her to write now, so, Bill, she may want to pen the next one. An interview w her gelding beau, Theo.

BTW: Hazel’s now reading a book rec from Emily, A Month in the Country, by J.L. Carr. It’s such a beautiful, short novel. “Like our summer,” Hazel said, “it was over too soon.” by @rozfoster

Happy Pub Day Susan Eva O'Donovan and MOVING TOWARD FREEDOM!

This is a beautifully written, groundbreaking history of the lives of enslaved Americans at the cusp of the Civil War.

(And, yes, that *is* my Union Army cavalry officer's hat.)

As the gears of capitalism churned ever faster, carried as it was on the shoulders of the enslaved, the necessity of laborers' movement and their interactions with the world beyond plantations broadened their skills, built their knowledge, and gave them far more political agency and awareness than historians have thus far considered.

Exposed to other cities, land, cultures, knowledge, and ideas, a political movement toward freedom of the enslaved rose, out of view, within the hearts and minds of teamsters, boatmen, traveling companions crossing land and sea, those going west for the Gold Rush, and even those going to Cuba to work.

Eminent historian Susan Eva O’Donovan argues that while performing brutal and involuntary work, enslaved Americans managed to accumulate the crucial experience and knowledge they'd use to bring about their own liberation.

Huge thanks to @penguinpress, Sara Bershtel, and @helenrouner 🙏 by @rozfoster

Read Sylvia Plath this summer! She's the real thing. 📕

THE BELL JAR: the perfect beach read.

“I had removed my patent leather shoes after a while, for they foundered badly in the sand. It pleased me to think they would be perched there on the silver log, pointing out to sea, like a sort of soul-compass, after I was dead.”

― Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar 🌞 😂

Hazel has her own barn a few yards over, but she loves to hang out in the doorway of *my* barn (the cabin next-door). I spend a lot of time looking at screens. I'm sure you do, too. Hazel's my antidote.

I work ~12 hours daily. Much of it on screens. Totable screens, a digital pen, paper notebooks, and a hoarder's worth of pen-pens and book-books.

Working analog isn't always possible. The truth is: I wouldn't be able to earn a living without Big Tech's near totalizing, global network of hardware and software...

A very small fraction of us can survive now without their products and services. As a euphemism, I've started calling the networked global tech stack 'the glass.' Less euphemistically, I call it the Disrupticon. I wrote an essay about it over at rozfoster.substack.com.

I think we've enclosed ourselves inside the Disrupticon in a way that's hard to see. It's everywhere. We need it to live. Like air. But it may be causing chronic trauma we don't perceive because we need it to earn a living...

Big Tech has a level of power now that's truly startling if you give it a think. The dynamic's familiar.... A few people have all the power over most of the rest of the population. That's not new...

But the scale at which Big Tech has a grip on the globe *is* new to human history. It's ubiquitous and normalized. Most of us can't really *see* it. Can you? ⬇️

You've been battered into survival mode, a state of constant vigilance, ready at all times to fight or flee from a relentless barrage of disruptive shocks.🫨

Welcome to the Disrupticon. 😳
