“It’s not just us boys. It’s everybody.”

This scene takes place after Horace Ida was abducted and severely beaten following the mistrial. We cannot know the exact words the five men shared in private. The dialogue is dramatized to imagine the fear, uncertainty and solidarity they may have experienced during that time.

For us, the word “everybody” reaches beyond the five men in that room. They came from Native Hawaiian, Japanese and Chinese local communities during a period when race, color and social position heavily influenced who held power, who was believed and who received protection in territorial Hawaiʻi. The line carries a larger fear that what happened to one of them could happen to others from the same communities.

Joseph “Kalani” Kahahawai, Horace Ida, David Takai, Henry Chang and Ben Ahakuelo were more than names in a famous trial. They were young local men with families, friendships and lives that had been turned upside down by the case and the violence that followed. Kalani would later be abducted and killed.

The purpose of Ala Moana Boys has always been to return humanity to these five men and to remember the lasting weight this history carried for their families and for Hawaiʻi.

This one’s a dark comedy with a ticking clock: two bomb squad officers respond to a bomb threat… only to get taken hostage by a suicide bomber who needs them to defuse another bomb. Chaos, tension, terrible decisions and somehow still funny. Either way, it’s shaping up to be a pretty explosive scene 💣🔥
