Where does the bass actually go?

Three ways to mount a trunk sub against a solid steel bulkhead, and what the seat actually hears from each.

First, the physics. At 30 Hz one wavelength is 37.5 ft. At 40 Hz it is 28 ft, and even 70 Hz is 16 ft, a full car length (1125 ft/s at 68F). The trunk is a fraction of one wavelength, so the cone pressurizes whichever air space it sits in. Which space matters far more than which way it points.

1. Sub fires at the trunk lid. The trunk becomes a closed steel box. You only hear the small share that leaks past the seat back and deck, and the lid becomes the loudest panel in the car. Rear-firing gets away with it in modern sedans because the rear seat leaks. Against solid steel, it doesn’t.

2. Baffle sealed to the rear deck. The cone loads the cabin directly and the raked rear glass pushes it forward. The trunk is out of the picture, so the lid open or closed makes no difference. The seal is the whole trick.

3. Opening cut through the bulkhead. The most direct path to the seat. Harder cut, permanent seat back, but the rear passengers sit right in it.

The rule: the cone has to talk to the cabin. The lid is not the problem. The bulkhead is.

Either way, CLD on the lid, quarters, floor, and deck before the box goes in. The body carries vibration no matter where the cone points.

Same speakers. Different car.

That is the part nobody believes until they hear it. The factory system in slide one is not broken. It is just running on a head unit that was built to a price, with no processing and no power behind it.

Swap the source and give it real amplification and the same paper cones you were about to throw away start doing things you did not know they could do.

Slides 2 through 5 are how you get there:

DNA software. 31 bands of parametric EQ, real crossovers, signal delay, and an input gain wizard so you are setting gains with a plot instead of a screwdriver and a guess.

PS Pro processors. 32 bit, up to 16 outputs, Velvet Sound conversion.

Falcon, Blackbird, Nighthawk. Full rated RMS, class D, with DSP onboard.

X2 800.8. Eight channels of clean when you are done compromising.

Loud is easy. Everything after that takes honest RMS, a DSP worth tuning, and a rep who actually helps.

We didn't measure it. Somebody else did.

The ARC Audio Nighthawk went on an independent bench at 14.00 volts, and it beat its published rating in every configuration — 262W at 4Ω, 446W at 2Ω, 507.6W at 1Ω, and 948 / 970 watts bridged into 4 and 2 ohms.

Read that last pair again. You cut the load in half and the output moved 22 watts.

When the rails hold like that, the system you specced is the system your customer actually hears.

It does it efficiently, too. 85% into 1 ohm, about 92 amps of draw for 950 watts — where a 57%-efficient amp making the same power needs closer to 122. Thirty extra amps is a bigger wire, a hotter chassis, and a harder life for the charging system.

THD+N stayed under 0.007% even at 1 ohm. And when a start-stop vehicle drops system voltage on restart, the Nighthawk keeps running all the way down to 4.6 volts.

Swipe for the numbers.

THD is one number pretending to be a diagnosis.

Two drivers can measure identically and be broken in completely different ways.

What separates them is parity, and it's sitting right there in the spectrum.

Even orders mean asymmetry. BL(x) not symmetric about rest, coil sitting off centre in the gap, suspension stiffening sooner one direction than the other.

That's mechanical. No EQ curve and no crossover setting removes it.

Odd orders mean something ran out of room. BL falling off at both extremes, suspension at its compliance limit, or the amp flattening peaks.

Most of that list sits upstream of the driver, so check gain structure before you blame the speaker.

The fastest way to tell them apart is a sweep at three drive levels instead of one. HD2 climbs 2 dB per dB. HD3 climbs 3. In the example on slide 4 HD3 starts 10 dB below HD2 and passes it by +12.

Read the slope, not the number.

Slide 6 is the one worth arguing with. LR2 and LR4 differ by 18 dB on the note and under 2 dB on the clipping harmonics, and the steeper one passes slightly more of them. Both are exactly −6 dB at Fc, because every Linkwitz-Riley order is. Your slope knob was never protecting the tweeter from clipping.

Numbers on slides 4, 5 and 6 are computed. Spectra on 1, 2, 3 and 7 are representative, not a measured product.

Your system isn't out of power.
It's out of room.

There's a moment where turning it up stops making things louder and starts making them worse.

Vocals get edgy.
Cymbals go grainy.
Bass grunts instead of hitting.

That sound is your speaker adding notes the song never had, and it's the same sound that kills tweeters.

Swipe for the 60-second test that finds your limit. No tools, no settings, nothing to buy.

Nobody kills a tweeter by having too much power. They kill it by not having enough.

When an amp runs out of room, roughly 19% of its output lands on your tweeter instead of the usual 5%.

Four times the heat, on the smallest speaker in the car.

SOUND DEADING MARKET IS MOSTLY
Same factory. 🏭 Different labels

Most budget sound deadening comes from one overseas factory — one recipe, rebranded a dozen times. One roll that claims to "do everything." No system. No test data.

Dynamat is different by design
and engineering. One brand out of Hamilton, Ohio since 1989
— not a relabel, a purpose-built system where every product has one job:
Xtreme kills vibration,
Dynaliner/DynaPad decouples,
DynaCore absorbs.

You lay them separately to get the performace becuase you have to

The difference shows up where it matters: a car parked in summer sun hits 150°F+ inside. Blended-down import compounds soften and sag right where your interior lives. Dynamat's engineered butyl is stable to 300°F.

Do it ONCE!
Do it RIGHT!

Copied labels are easy. Engineering isn't.
