Dear melon plant: Look, I appreciate the ambition, but do you really think all these little melons you're growing are going to get ripe before the first frost? Look, the maple's already throwing in the towel for the season... #gardening #Minnesota A tiny green melon, not even as long as my fingers yet, still growing on the plant. There's some protective chickenwire in the background, and plant and mini-melon are wet from rain. by @rr4idic

Another #book I've read lately: The Witch Roads, by Kate Elliott. Holy cow, this was one of my favorites for this year. Absolutely gorgeous writing, vibrant and detailed without being tedious. Really loved the sense of depth to the world. It's the first half of a duology, so I'm going to have to go get the sequel... yesterday.

The writing in this one reminded me of C. J. Cherryh's The Fortress in the Eye of Time, which I also loved. They both do "this world feels deep and old" very well.

That being said, this book may be a little slow for some modern readers. My husband made the same book comparison I did, saying he expected I'd love this one (he was right) but it wasn't his favorite.

#amreading #fantasy The Witch Roads, by Kate Elliott. Three tall spires loom in front of a partly cloudy sky. On a walkway to the spires, a pair of tiny people are dwarfed by two rows of stone statues guarding the path. (And note well: this looks very much like an actual scene from the book, and it was epic.) by @rr4idic

#bloomscroll! A few fun items from our #garden:

Lion's foot, flowers and leaves. I loved the leaves on this plant; the cute flowers were a fun bonus!

Sneezeweed. Why is it called sneezeweed? Maybe I'll find out after these bright yellow flowers finish doing their thing.

Speregellii (I think) and river oats. No flowers on these guys, but the shapes are fun. by @rr4idic

A #book I've read lately: Villain, by Natalie Zina Walschots. The book is _good_, even if most of the characters are... morally gray at best. Like Hench (the previous book), I read this for the smackdown of the horrible superhero organization and the competent protagonist. Be warned, it's very dark; no one's hands are clean and the moral event horizon is very much crossed.

#amreading #sff #superheroes Villain, by Natalie Zina Walschots. The title is on there in HUGE font, above which stands the silhouette of a short-haired woman with a cane. A caped superhero's silhouette stands in her shadow, with four other super-silhouettes around them. The actual book is pinker than the reddish tone here; it was a bit dark when I took the picture. by @rr4idic

There's a lot of sad stuff right now, so how about a #bloomscroll?

First up: zinnias!

The old-fashioned rose plant we've got smells excellent.

What are the wildflowers underneath? I don't know. Something grown from seed.

Only one marigold seed lived long enough to flower.

The survivor isn't a flower, it's a shrub. Yeesh.

I'm optimistic that we'll get melons before the first frost hits. Our plants' first raspberries were tasty.

And to finish it off: snapdragons are fun.

An unexpected bonus to being an author in this bundle: I get copies of _all_ the books! (My poor TBR pile.)

I've read the first chapter of A Necromancer's Guide to Grave Mistakes already, and it's amazing. I hope nothing bad happens to Cybil and Fritz, the undead pet mice. Oh, and this murder investigation is getting complicated fast, and I'm here for it. #books #fantasy #magic A Necromancer's Guide to Grave Mistakes, by Melissa Wright. A woman with bright blue eyes and medium-brown hair wears a mostly-blue dress and carries an undead badger. There's a spooky ominous graveyard in the background. by @rr4idic

Meanwhile, a recent #book: A Trade of Blood, by Robert Jackson Bennett. As brilliant as the preceding books; come for the fair play mystery and creepy biomagic, stay the commentary on the ills of factory farming.

I'm kind of glad we _didn't_ have to see the flensing halls; the smells and implied horror were enough.

The on-screen horror in the epilogue, though? So good. (And as much horror as I'll take, thanks.)

#amreading #fantasy #mystery A Trade of Blood, by Robert Jackson Bennet. An Ana and Din mystery. The hardcover book is red-tinted, with an engraving-style image of a mushroom, and more mushrooms growing from a disembodied head, in white on the front. There are silhouetted figures standing in corners and poisonous-looking yellow mushrooms growing in around the edges, especially the spine. by @rr4idic

Good morning! That Thing I've been teasing about is Out In The World -- specifically, The Cloak and Its Wizard is part of a Storybundle!

The TLDR is that you can get my book PLUS a bunch of other books about magical folks all together.

The theme: Warlocks, Wizards, and Soothsayers, and _this_ bunch are all written by SWFA authors! You should also know: if you've already read some or (somehow?) all of these, it's entirely possible to give the bundle as a gift. Links are a pain, so: Storybundle is the word you're looking for on the Internets, with a "com" thereafter...

Some of my #aliens (in an old unpublished manuscript that needs a bunch of editing) bear a superficial resemblance to those in Project Hail Mary.

Fortunately, they're not actually that much alike, as you can see from the doodle. I wrote a #blog post comparing the two, and... thankfully, the resemblance is only carapace deep. Check out the ol' link-in-profile if you want the details!

#amwriting #scifi #aliens It's a pencil sketch of a five-legged alien, with no head, wearing a "hat," with a few annotations. They're not an Eridian from Project Hail Mary, though -- they're my own creation, and they 100% have eyes. by @rr4idic

Another #book I've read lately: The Dragon Has Some Complaints, by John Wiswell. This was 100% as good as I anticipated, with a nice blend of silliness and feels/peril. It's from the PoV of the three-headed (formerly four-headed) dragon on the cover, which is an absolute delight.

Many of the humans are Very Queer, in case that's a selling point for folks.

There was also a part where my reaction was "YES, EAT HIM. GOOD!"

#amreading #fantasy The Dragon Has Some Complaints, by John Wiswell. There are three red dragon-heads on the cover -- one very serious and wearing a monocle, one enraged, and one apparently happy at being skritched by a woman in the center with long red hair. by @rr4idic

I've just sent around my first email newsletter in a while, with the short story "Five Alarm Morning" (about mad scientist roommates) included. With the attached doodle as a cover.

Missed out? You can sign up from the contact list on my webpage (see profile).

Also, because MailChimp is silly, I can't auto-send an email in response to a human signing up without paying them money... but my subscriber numbers are low enough that I can send a personal note instead, bonus stories included. Simple doodle cover for my short story, "Five Alarm Morning." There's a bright yellow fuzzy octopus stuffy on top of a red alarm clock, which is almost at six o'clock. In the background, a terrarium with a color strip temperature readout contains a strange, green, blobby creature with one slitted eye. I have only just now realized I forgot to put the author name on there, oops. by @rr4idic

In interior decoration news: I got the big new frame back from the shop, and it looks great! (Frameworks, if you're in the Twin Cities.) Everything gets hung up once I find time to paint the office...

I think it'll go well with my other poster.

Am I a huge nerd? Yes, yes I am. #startrek A framed poster which is a blueprint for the exterior of the USS Enterprise D, from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It's got multiple views and lots of labels, including the Bussard collector! by @rr4idic
