This month, Robb Report India spotlights brands taking the India story global. As the first U.S. gallery dedicated solely to contemporary South Asian design, House of Santal (@houseofsantal) is doing exactly that. For a long time, South Asian craftsmanship was boxed into being ‘just a surface pattern’ or categorised as ‘affordable.’ House of Santal, founded by Raksha Sanikam(@rsanikam), is located steps from Rockefeller Center, this massive 8,000 sq ft space. It is the first and only full-scale collectable design gallery in the U.S. dedicated entirely to contemporary South Asian designers and master artisans. Their motive? Showcasing pure, luxury value and proving that South Asian design belongs on the global ultra-luxury stage on equal footing with the rest of the world. Read the full article at the link in bio. #India and the broader #SouthAsia region are repositories of centuries-old artisanal knowledge and craftsmanship, but for much of the modern era, this craft excellence was harnessed primarily in production-focused roles, with the West consuming the finished goods while creative authorship remained under-recognized. As the first collectible design gallery in the U.S. entirely dedicated to contemporary South Asian design, @houseofsantal in New York City aims to bring these legacy artisan traditions to the forefront of the international #design stage. Founder Raksha Sanikam (@rsanikam) opened the Midtown #gallery in February, aiming to build a space that champions designers, studios and master artisans who fuse heritage techniques with modern form. Read more by @elisartgal at the link in our bio by @rsanikam

For Harper’s Bazaar India latest issue (@bazaarindia ) “For a long time, Indian makers and craftspeople have contributed to some of the most important design and luxury industries in the world, often without receiving the visibility they deserve,” says @houseofsantal’s founder Raksha Sanikam (@rsanikam). “House of Santal is a way to place this work coming out of India and South Asia in direct conversation with the global design world. It’s a platform where it can be seen, understood and collected on its own terms.” Opened in New York earlier this year, House of Santal brings together works by 13 South Asian designers. Each piece is a collectible rooted in honouring artisanal craftsmanship. #design #southasian #craft The Beevi Pai Swing by @ar.veeram (Design ni Dukaan, @design.ni.dukaan ) and Majja Design Studio (@majja._.co ) showcases an unusual use of the Pattamadai mats, which are traditionally hand-woven by women artisans in Tamil Nadu using river grass. The mats are elevated from the floor onto an old-world Indian swing. Image courtesy: House of Santal #design #southasian #craft The Colour Block Totem is a whimsical planter. House of Santal (@houseofsantal) was born from Raksha Sanikam’s (@rsanikam) belief that contemporary South Asian collectible design deserves a place on the international stage. The New York-based gallery presents craft not as a relic, but as the starting point for something new. The inaugural exhibition brings together thirteen artists, each beginning with a craft tradition and following it somewhere unexpected. Through experimentation, lineage, and material exploration, House of Santal creates a sharper view of contemporary South Asian design while opening new conversations around craft and culture. “For Indian design to be recognised as conceptual and collectible in its own right, designers need a platform to experiment,” says Raksha. Through exhibitions, curatorial themes, and commissioned works, House of Santal continues to champion the next chapter of South Asian design. In the two months since our debut in New York, House of Santal has made a splash in the press. We're grateful to be recognized alongside our talented designers. It's an extra special honor to be selected as 1 of 7 new galleries globally in Dezeen's recent roundup. Thank you for the support. We're looking forward to putting South Asian collectible design on the global stage, and we hope you'll join us in our journey. by @rsanikam
It’s been a defining chapter, building something I care about deeply. What began as curiosity became a practice, and the practice has now grown into conviction: South Asian design belongs at the center of the global conversation. A first glimpse of what’s coming. House of Santal is now live. Link in bio. 📷 @samthecobra by @rsanikam
