DEVIN TROY STROTHER
B M W (A Black Man’s Wish)

Until September 26

Devin Troy Strother (b. 1986, lives and works in Los Angeles, US) presents his fourth solo exhibition with Ruttkowski;68.
The show B M W (A Black Man’s Wish) borrows its title from a phrase that emerged from the aspirational culture of 1980s Harlem. Humorous on the surface, the expression reflects a time when European luxury cars functioned as symbols of status, mobility, and success. Within that world, the BMW became more than a vehicle, it represented arrival, visibility, and the fantasy of escaping economic limitation.
Strother himself owns a black 2012 328-i BMW station wagon, a detail that shifts the work from cultural observation into something more personal and self-reflective. The title operates both sincerely and ironically: The object once imagined as unattainable is now ordinary, practical, even domestic. That tension between aspiration and reality sits at the center of the work.
The work also exists within a long tradition of reinterpreting corporate symbols through black vernacular, humor, and cultural slang, transforming luxury branding into something communal, coded, and emotionally loaded. “B M W” (A Black Man’s Wish) reframes the car as a psychological and symbolic object, one tied to desire, projection, identity, and performance.

NADEZHDA GEORGIEVA
Ascension Unbound

April 18 – June 20

Nadezhda Georgieva (b. 1973 in Sofia, BG), a self-taught multimedia artist, has never confined herself to one artistic discipline, genre, or medium; instead, she enters into a layered relationship: with herself, with her creativity, with materials that refuse to be mere means to an end. Clay, glaze, wood, metal, linen, wool, ink, charcoal, acrylics — substances that do not illustrate, but challenge each other into new forms of existence.

Ascension Unbound explores the duality of groundedness and emergence. On the one hand, her work reflects her own story of becoming an artist, a somewhat unusual path to self-discovery that brought with it many unexpected twists and turns, rooted in lived experiences and the burning flame of creative expression. At the same time, her work is an invitation. To contemplate, to seek out friction, to push for one’s innermost truths.

Together, the multimedia sculptures reveal a process sustained by continuity, interdependence and devotion. Becoming an artist does not mean finding a form, but constantly surrendering one’s own authority in dialogue with the material. This exhibition does not show what art is. It shows what happens when one decides to stop avoiding it.

Nadezhda Georgieva’s work emerges as a mirror, a companion, a disturbance. She encourages her viewers to slow down, to sense texture and absence, and to navigate their own questions around identity, perception, self-expression, and belonging.

GROUP SHOW AND CATALOGUE RELEASE OF 2025

With works by:
Carolin Eidner, Carolina Aguirre, Carlotta Bailly-Borg, Dennis Buck, Ellen Antico, Eva Beresin, François Halard, Guim Tió, Henrik Godsk, José María Yturralde, Larry Clark, Michael Günzer, Monica Kim Garza, Ornela Vorpsi, Parmen Daushvili, Philip Emde, Prosper Legault, Russel Maurice, Stefan Strumbel, Thomas Wachholz

Ruttkowski;68 is pleased to present 2025, a group show reflecting on the year 2025 in retrospection.

The past year has been marked by intensity, movement and transformation. 2025 unfolded as a year of reorientation — shaped by expansion, restructuring, and a series of beginnings that demanded clarity and conviction. Ruttkowski;68 entered a new phase, one that felt both challenging and affirming. At times overwhelming, this year asked for decisiveness in a moment when the art market itself stood on fragile ground.

Rather than retreat, we chose focus. Out of necessity, a new strength emerged: a sharpened attention to sculptural practices, a deeper commitment to sustainability, and an emphasis on long-term relationships with artists, collaborators and institutions. These shifts were not strategic gestures alone, but responses to lived conditions — ways of shaping continuity through uncertainty.

New York brought a distinct sense of arrival. Together with new partners and a newly formed team, we began to feel at home in the city. In parallel, the opening of a new space in Bochum marked a deeply personal homecoming, reconnecting the gallery’s trajectory with the roots of the founder Nils Müller. This vibrant and dynamic journey is embodied by the exhibition 2025. It documents the multifaceted evolution not only of Ruttkowski;68 but also of the artists and highlights the 29 exhibitions realized throughout the year and is taking place at the spot where it all began, that shaped the R;68 DNA.

Last two weekends at ruttkowski;68 in cologne ( @rsixtyeight ) of „Friends with Benefits“ with 7 fantastic artists on display till 20th of December❤️🦥 🥳

Image: „Candy Scooper“, 2025, 50X40cm, Öl auf Leinwand

Ruttkowski;68 is pleased to present Friends With Benefits, a group exhibition bringing together seven artists who—following the invitation of Oskar Rink—allowed their friendships to shape and curate the gallery’s space.

The artists’ diverse practices span generations, disciplines, and perspectives, exploring the subtle and powerful dynamics of artistic friendship. From long-standing bonds to connections with emerging peers, the exhibition reflects on what it means to share the artist’s life—its triumphs, frustrations, and quiet intimacies—with others who understand the same compulsions, obsessions, and struggles.

The works on display reveal relationships built on mutual support, shared motivation, and sometimes tension. They show that friendships in art are not defined by agreement in style or approach, but by the trust, challenge, and care that arise from being part of an artistic entourage. Through intimate studio visits, late-night conversations, and collaborative projects, these connections create fertile grounds where ideas are tested, failures endured, and new visions emerge.

Friendship is not only central to the artists’ practice but also to Ruttkowski;68 itself, where long-term relationships have shaped the gallery’s vision, projects, and ongoing development. Friends With Benefits celebrates the unseen structures of artistic life: the networks, dialogues, and shared persistence that make creation possible.

With works by:

Rike Bewer

Adam Lupton

Jonas Mosbacher

Louisa Pieper

Oskar Rink

Moritz Schleime

Ulrike Theusner

A Mind`s Gamble
Performative Card Readings

with Sarah Caillard in her exhibition
Butterfly in the Stomach

Saturday, October 04, 2025
4PM

The artist Sarah Caillard will perform readings using her own uniquely designed deck of cards. This game of psychological chance delves into the many facets of the ego, drawing on both symbolic language and psychoanalytical thought.

Each reading offers a momentary snapshot of the psyche – a glimpse into the emotional and intuitive landscape through which the individual is currently moving. The cards reveal a synchronistic response, resonating with the person’s inner state and unspoken questions.

Acting as a mirror, the reading gently guides awareness toward what is ready to be seen, understood, or integrated. taken in R68 by @rsixtyeight

Sarah Caillard
Butterfly in the stomach

Until 04.10.2025

Sarah Caillard (b. 1988 in Paris, FR) presents her first solo exhibition, Butterfly in the stomach, with Ruttkowski;68 in Cologne.

Inspired by the metamorphosis of insects, particularly the transition from caterpillar to butterfly, caillard explores themes of intimacy, memory, and identity. The butterfly, which preserves memory in spite of its transformation and passes on part of it to the next generation, serves as a vehicle for the artist’s exploration of the ever-evolving nature of the human psyche.

Using molds of herself and close friends, caillard creates concrete sculptures that reinterpret iconic female figures from art history and pop culture. By blending sacred and secular symbols, these works examine the tension between personal identity and external representation. In doing so, Caillard transforms the traditional static nature of sculpture, introducing movement and fluidity into the medium. In her silk paintings, she extends the exploration of epigenetic transmission, leaving visible traces of the weaving process, which recalls the continuity of memory across generations. Resembling a deck of cards, the series showcases intimate gestures that link the physical and the psychological.

Butterfly in the stomach evokes the unsettling yet transformative sensation of change, merging biological processes with emotional states, while pushing the body beyond a mere motif. taken in R68 by @rsixtyeight
