Really interesting take on public education. Much more fact based and neutral vs political. I enjoyed and learned from this article. Full article link is in the comments. by @rsm67

The Death of the Generalist CEO (And Why It’s a Problem)

The generalist CEO is disappearing—and with them, the ability to see around corners.
Meanwhile, U.S. employee engagement is stuck at 33% (Gallup, 2024), and organizational silos are quietly costing companies billions in coordination failures, turnover, and misaligned strategy.
We say we want innovation, adaptability, and resilience.
But we keep hiring leaders who’ve only operated in one lane.
As businesses grow more complex, we’re seeing a steady rise in functionally narrow executives—domain experts promoted into leadership, but without experience across disciplines.
And it shows.
•	Strategy that doesn’t scale across teams
•	Departmental wins that don’t translate to enterprise success
•	Silos that hit KPIs but quietly erode long-term company value and performance
You’ve seen it:
Sales exceeds targets—but marketing loses brand trust.
Finance cuts costs—but operations can’t deliver.
KPIs look great in isolation, but the business starts bleeding in the margins.
What we’re losing is the polymathic leader—someone who:
•	Connects finance to ops, brand to product
•	Understands how decisions in one function ripple across the system
•	Leads not from a playbook, but from structure, insight, and lived cross-functional depth
And this isn’t just a stylistic preference.
It’s a measurable performance lever—backed by real data:
📌 A 2025 Harvard Kennedy School study found that “leader-type” CEOs—those focused on cross-functional coordination and enterprise vision—delivered a 7% increase in firm sales and higher labor productivity than their manager-type peers.
📌 A 2025 review in the Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship analyzed 54 studies and concluded that transformational leadership, which thrives on adaptability and cross-functional fluency, significantly improves firm performance—especially in dynamic industries.
It’s not that generalists can’t go deep.
It’s that they’ve gone deep in multiple places—and that makes them the only ones capable of leading systems, not silos.
If your executive team only knows how to optimize their own vertical, they won’t recognize when the system is misfiring across the board.

Behind the Glass at Disney: What I Learned About Messaging, Leadership, and Productive Discomfort.

When I was selected for Disney’s executive immersion program, I expected brand decks and big ideas. What I didn’t expect was a front-row seat to the inner workings of one of the most synchronized brand ecosystems on the planet.

That learning didn’t stop in Burbank.

A few months later, I was invited to join a multi-day research initiative in my home market—alongside senior leaders from Disney Channel, ABC Family, Jetix, Toon Disney, and researchers from across the company.

I sat behind the glass with executives like the President of Hollywood Records, the Head of Radio Disney, and senior brand, content, and research leaders.

And I listened.
> To the moderators.
> To the real-time feedback from kids and parents.
> And—most importantly—to how these executives interpreted the tension between creative, brand voice, and cultural relevance.

One insight that stayed with me (though never said outright):

To truly engage the next generation, the message has to push just to the edge of discomfort. If the parents aren’t squirming a little, the kids probably aren’t paying attention.

That balance—between safety and signal, comfort and relevance—was baked into every creative decision in the room.
It shaped how I thought about brand storytelling, emotional friction, and messaging that resonates deeply.

It was also the moment I realized:

Safe messaging might satisfy legal. But it doesn’t move culture.
And creative that doesn’t disturb… doesn’t deliver.

That insight stayed with me for years—and ultimately became the foundation for naming my consulting firm: Disturbance.

Because whether you're working in media, advocacy, entertainment, or branding, you don’t break through by being agreeable.

Because the truth is, messaging that avoids all discomfort rarely lands with conviction. It might please a committee—but it won’t build a movement, inspire action, or shift culture. by @rsm67

Geting ready for my introduction and class takeover!
We talked sales. Ethics. AI. Values. DEI. CRM systems. Glengarry Glen Ross. And the double-edged sword of tech-fueled engagement in a world starving for real connection.
I didn’t sugarcoat it.
Because students deserve more than slogans — they deserve context. About what it really means to choose a job. About what it means to align with a company’s values. And about how to navigate a world of platforms, pressure, and performance metrics without losing your humanity in the process.
