DHS says AI can help agencies process enormous FOIA backlogs, and Customs and Border Protection has tested technology that can assist with identifying information for redaction, with human reviewers still involved. Transparency advocates warn that automated systems could reproduce the government’s existing tendency to over-redact or make incorrect legal judgments about what should remain secret. Documented: DHS is expanding AI-assisted FOIA processing and CBP has used technology capable of helping classify or redact records. Concern, not established fact: critics fear these systems could ultimately produce more secrecy; there is not evidence that AI has been secretly given final authority over all federal FOIA releases.
