Petrichor in Bangladesh (June 2022)
Mixed medium on canvas
36 x 24

There is a particular moment when the rain first touches the earth. The air changes, the ground releases its perfume of petrichor, soft scent of the drenched floras, and the landscape seems to breathe differently.

Petrichor in Bangladesh is an abstract mixed medium painting inspired by this fleeting transformation. Layers of green, blue, gold, and violet evoke riparian margins, reflected water, and colours dissolving through the monsoon rain.

In Bangladesh, water is woven into rhythm of life. The monsoon reshapes land, leaving behind not only water, but memory. The perfume of wet earth, the gentle sound of dew and rainwater falling onto the water, soft sound of nature, and quiet whistle of air moving through the rain.

It is less a depiction of a place than an impression of a moment, felt, remembered, and translated through colour, texture, and movement.

I leave the composition open, allowing colour and material to become the subject, leaving space for the observer to experience the work their own way. by @rtatelierco

FROM ONION SKINS TO COLOUR

The onion skins are collected by the designer themselves and treated with sustainable care.

At RT Atelier Co, our process is guided by our sustainable standards and compliance, with GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) principles supporting our commitment to responsible materials and conscious production.

The onion skins undergo washing and cleaning before they are introduced to the organic yarn. Laboratory testing is an essential part of this process, ensuring that the materials and resulting dyes are carefully evaluated before they become part of the textile.

ALIZARIN MADDER | MANJISTHA

“Madder for cloth. Paan for lips.
A colour drawn from the earth, and carried through time.” - Refaya Turshin @refayaturshin

Madder or Manjistha carries a history of red that reaches deep into South Asian textile traditions.

For centuries, its roots and stems were used to draw warm reds from the Earth, worked into cloth by generations of dyers. In Bengal, madder was part of the natural dye vocabulary surrounding its extraordinary textiles traditions. By the 16th to 18th centuries, Bengal textiles had become coveted across Asia and Europe, while Dhaka muslin was celebrated for its almost weightless, gossamer quality.

This madder comes naturally sourced from Ahmedabad, another historic centre of India’s textile and natural-dye traditions. by @rtatelierco

Somewhere along the river in Narayanganj, Dhaka

A river, a boat, a story carried through generations.

On the screen, a quiet moment from the rivers of Bengal. Behind it, an audience gathered to listen, to look, and to remember.

The Orna, delicate and gossamer, has long been more than an adornment. Like a painter’s brushstroke, it carries traces of Bengal’s rich textile heritage.

Dhakai Muslim graced the shoulder of the impoverished. Fishermen’s wives would gather the day’s catch in the delicate fabric, transforming it into a nourishing feast of fish and rice.

Some histories live in books. Others remain woven into fabric, carried by rivers, and passed quietly from one generation to the next.
