Did you hear I’m back in school?

Last session, we had to choose what styles of therapy we planned to focus on. I didn’t choose existential therapy as my focus — but it gave me a sentence I can’t unhear. Meaning isn’t handed to you. You build it, choice by choice — even when forgiveness is still unfinished business.

What’s one choice you’re still learning to forgive yourself for?

Follow me on Substack for more.

Friday Flowers 🌸 🌹 🌼

This week, flowers go to @taibeau .

Tai is so many things at once: godmother, friend, sister, auntie, speaker, advisor, boss, faith leader, our Spelman Sister 💙. She not only commands a room — she leads with a beautiful softness, and she does everything with excellence. That balance is something not everyone can hold. And in my mind, the key to her success is simple: her heart is always in the right place.

Years ago I had partially paid for a Bali trip with Tai and a group of women. When I told her I just couldn’t go after Justin passed, she quietly made sure the rest of my trip was taken care of. That’s who she is.

I’ve been to her LA hillside hikes, joined her morning lives, and hiked on the beach with the Tribe for a Today show segment on @morningmindsetwithtai.

And just today, I texted her asking for a referral for a nonprofit. She replied immediately and said she’d be happy to make the connection. Immediately. That’s Tai.

Thank you, Tai, for being exactly who you are. You deserve your flowers. 💐

Who deserves their flowers next week? Tell me below. 👇

#POV: He brought the soccer ball. I brought the remote. @officialbluey won. ⚽️🐾😭

He said “outside.” I said “one more episode.” 9
episodes later, I’m still on this floor. Be honest… is Bluey actually a kids’ show? Because I’m grown and INVESTED. When I tell you it’s a good show. It’s a good show 💙

This one started in Atlanta. 💐

A few weeks back I met my girl @drcherrycsuite cousin and author Nicole D. Collier, and she signed her book *Just Right Jillian* for a very special young reader back home in Houston. Her words to him: ‘To Malcolm — You are Just Right! Thank you for being you!’

Monday night I put that book in Malcolm’s hands. That smile in the first photo? That’s the whole story.

@essentialcoco thank you — for this book, for your heart for our babies, and for reminding every quiet kid that their voice matters. These are your flowers. 💐

Welcome to Friday Flowers — every Friday I’m giving flowers to somebody who’s pouring into people. Who deserves theirs next week? Drop a name in the comments. 👇🏾

Knowing how this ends, I would still choose every moment I had with Justin. A thousand times over. 🤍

Our Grieving Mamas gathered with @drlauraberman for one of our monthly meetups turned @todayshow segment for her new book, Crying Out Loud.

We sat in our circle. We cried. We took a baseball bat to a pillow. We let some of what we carry come out.

Laura calls it surfing the waves of grief. The grief doesn’t get smaller. I’m learning how to ride it.

As a mother who found her son and tried to save him with CPR, I carry an anger at myself that is hard to put into words. These mamas have been a lifeline. A godsend. A place where I don’t have to explain everything to be understood. 🙏🏽

What I’m learning:

🦋 I can’t spend my energy chasing people who disappeared.
🦋 My anger needs somewhere to go.
🦋 Other people lost and love Justin, too.
🦋 Some people don’t know how to show up. I can give them grace and protect my peace.
🦋 The small stuff gets less of me.
🦋 I can miss Justin and still make room for joy.
🦋 Community is everything.

Thank you, Laura, for helping us look grief in the eye—and find our way forward together.

P.S. That’s Justin on my shirt. His bracelet on my wrist. His 9 on my sleeve.

Always with me. Always his mama. 🤍

Bali: “Get on the swing.”
Me: “Where’s my flowing dress and film crew?” 😂🌴

Just out here living my best Bali #pathofthevisionary life… on a high frequency and with an even higher regard for safety. 😩😂

My path is being revealed…

Seeing @kaepernick7 on the @todayshow this morning stopped me in my tracks. It has been 10 years since he first took a knee—and he has not played in the NFL since.

As a young, black quarterback, Justin looked up to him. When Kaepernick’s protest sparked a national conversation about #racialinjustice, Justin and his teammates @young.deezy and @zay_hen3 made the decision to take a knee, too.

Needless to say, it was controversial at @odowddragons —controversial enough that the school held an assembly, with Justin serving on the student panel.

And as his mother, I sat in the stands while they took a knee—not to speak for him, but to make sure he knew he was not standing alone.

But again, this is who Justin was—and still is to me.

When something happening in the world touched his beliefs, he didn’t just talk about it. He took a stand, even when that stand meant taking a knee. He was a leader who was sometimes beautifully unafraid of what other people might think.

And despite the controversy—or perhaps because his teammates understood the heart behind his actions—Justin was still awarded the Spirit of the Team Award.

That says so much about him. He could challenge the room and still be loved by the people in it. He could stand firmly for justice and still embody the heart of a teammate.

The news still has a way of bringing Justin back to me—his voice, his courage, his convictions and the young man he was becoming. Today, Colin Kaepernick reminded me of Justin the leader.

And since September is the ninth month, I’ve decided we’re celebrating 9️⃣ all month long. One day could never hold all that he was—or all the reasons I remain proud.

Proud then. Proud now. Proud always. 🖤
