I’m releasing a song this weekend for the first time ever! This is my folksy take on the Song of Mary (Magnificat) from Luke’s Gospel, and I’m so happy to feature my Lydia on the track. The Magnificat is centered in this Sunday’s Advent 4 readings—hence the release timing.

Very special thanks to my friend @rtospeedwagon for acting as co-producer, engineer, and cheerleader, helping me finally realize my long dream of writing, recording and releasing music. Thanks also to @steve_belvilus @thejessedwards @2moneyruss and @philipsheegog for lending their fabulous musicianship to my song.

“You Have Done It All” will be available on all streaming platforms on Sunday, December 22, the Fourth Sunday in Advent, or shortly thereafter (first time doing this!), and I’ll be grateful for you to listen and sing along. by @rtospeedwagon

Here’s a bunch of cool stuff with cool folks I’ve been meaning to talk about:
1. Manning the desk as @bbrownetc tracks massive guitar solos is my favorite.
2. I realized I’ve been in the audiobook recording world for 10 years this year. That’s wiiiiild.
3. Watching @emilyroseburnett knock her release show out of the PARK @nublunyc with @zachleomusic, @marcelhamel and @rhythmworkshopny.
4. Recording basic tracks for @bbrownetc’s songs at @voyagersoundnyc was the biggest joy. Great folks over there.
5. Thanks to @irvingg_recording, I got to see @jonlampleymusic’s new album release show at @technicahousenyc. Prob the most inspiring stories and performances in recent memory.
6. Recording and mixing more @bbrownetc. This time, a concert at @allangelschurch with Marion Beckenstein and Peter McCulloch.
7. Loved seeing good friends, @officialdavymusic, playing with @iamjonguerra in BK. Go stream their new song, “Psyche” like right now!
8. BASS
9. From a whiiile ago but I can’t NOT keep talking about how incredible @lambiasematt and Todd Smith were on a couple of tracks for @thesethlittle. Can’t WAIT for these to come out (hopefully very soon…?).

Halloween Jazz Session:

1. Rabbi Steven Blane on vocals (United Audio UT87), Lucy on piano (Audio Technica ATM 350s), James on double bass (LR Baggs Para DI…bc I thought it would be an electric bass 😅), and Augustín on drums (more in slide 2)

2. Trying some things here. My reference was some old Chet Baker from the 50s so I wanted a good mono-compatible kit sound. I love my Fathead ribbon on mono OH but it picks up a lot of the room/bleed (which isn’t always what the band wants to hear). That’s where the DPA 4011s come in: using them in a Glynn Johns config, fairly close (since we were mostly using brushes). Checked phase between all 3. The close mics live on the drums anyway so I captured them for safety. Added a @miktekaudio MK300 to the AKG D112 on the kick and tented it. Also threw in a Sennheiser wireless lav mic taped to the batter side of the kick for fun.

3. Allen and Heath SQ5 preamps going straight into Pro Tools. The A&H sounds great and gives me multiple headphone mixes. Sometimes I’ll commit the board’s EQ or compression to disk but this time I just used the HPFs and it sounded great.

@bbrownetc and I spent a lot of time searching for the right sound for his song, “Satellite” today. All it took in the end was a 414 through @fyrbirdproductions’ @uaudio 610 and a 4011. Can’t wait for the world to hear this track. by @rtospeedwagon
