La famosa autopista 1 de California, también es conocida como Cabrillo Hwy en su tramo principal pasando por Big Sur. Su nombre proviene, cómo no, de Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, un marinero cordobés (y no portugués como mucha gente cree) que lideró la primera expedición europea en la costa californiana, en 1542. Cabrillo también escribió el primer texto laico publicado en las Américas, una crónica sobre un terremoto en Guatemala.

Californa’s notorious PCH is also known as Cabrillo Hwy as it passes through Big Sur. It is named after Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a sailor from Cordoba, Spain (not Portugal, as many would have you believe) who, in 1542, led the first European expedition along the California coast. Cabrillo also wrote the first non-religious text published in the Americas, an account of an earthquake in Guatemala.

Parece mentira, pero estas dos fotos fueron tomadas desde el mismo lugar. Han pasado 167 años de por medio, y en ese periodo, Los Ángeles pasó de 4.000 habitantes a casi 4 millones.

It’s hard to tell, but these two pictures were taken from the same vantage point. What a difference 167 years make! In that period, Los Angeles went from 4,000 residents to nearly 4 million.

Así lucía la Pico House en 1877 y así luce en 2024. Construida en 1869 por Pío Pico, último Gobernador de Alta California antes de convertirse en un territorio estadounidense, sigue siendo un centro cultural importante en Los Ángeles.
