‘Ophelia’s Reflection’

I met this black lab while staying at Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara. He belonged to the estate and somehow, every night after dinner, he would be there waiting for me.

We’d walk for hours together. He knew every path, so I would just follow him through the landscape and let him lead the way. By the end of my stay, I had gotten so used to seeing him waiting for me that coming home and not having him there felt strange.

I really missed her, so I wanted to paint her. There was something about the unconditional love she gave so freely—to me, and probably to everyone she met. When I look at this painting now, I think about those long walks in Ireland and how special it is to be loved by an animal, even for a short time.

I made this painting from a moment on the train from Dublin to Galway. This bright green field caught my eye, and I’m so glad I had my sketchbook with me to capture it and bring it back home.

I’ve painted so many faces before, but I’m realizing landscapes can hold just as much emotion. We get attached to people, animals, and certain places—and sometimes they’re just as hard to let go of.

I left the edges unfinished because it felt right, like a memory I didn’t want to completely define.

And Henry? I made him up.

Ireland 💚 A little escape from LA that I didn’t realize how much I needed. Time alone, long walks, new landscapes, and a chance to clear my head and just take everything in.

One of the most unexpected moments was coming across a Tracey Emin bronze while walking through the estate where I was staying. I found myself going back to it most mornings with a cup of coffee, sitting nearby and letting my thoughts wander. Knowing the work came from a difficult period in her life made those quiet mornings with it feel even more meaningful, especially at this particular time in my own life.

And then there was Ophelia, an 11-year-old black Labrador who lives on the estate. Every evening around 6:30 she would wait by the door, hoping one of the guests would take her for a walk. One rainy evening I saw her sitting there as I was heading back to my room, and there was really no saying no to her. After that, we walked together almost every day. Sometimes for a couple of hours, with her leading me down different paths and showing me around. The best company I could have asked for. I’ll miss her very much.

And of course, I can’t get enough of Ireland’s emerald greens. Leaving with a full camera roll, a clearer head, some very good memories, and so much inspiration for the new works to come. 💚 by @rubenstudio

There was something about the stillness of Palos Verdes—the landscape holding its place while boats quietly appeared, passed through the distance, and disappeared again.

I loved painting those small moments of movement against such a calm horizon, somewhere between here and there.

I took my watercolors to Palos Verdes this weekend—hiked for a while, then found a quiet place to sit and paint. Sometimes it’s nice to slow down and simply paint what’s in front of you.
