If small, tart and red is your jam (intentional) then have we got some things for you! Oregon-grown cranberries are available now for all you extra-eager bakers and jelly makers. And now’s your last shot at snagging Dolgo Crab apples from the good folks at @kiyokawafamilyorchards Bring many many tiny bags or one really big one to bring these tasty, tangy offerings home! by @rubinetteproduce
Take a peak into the shopping basket of a local chef or foodie friend and you’ll find
.a bundle of sticks!? đŸ€” Oh no, not a stick! That’s Burdock root! This culinary root (also highly valued for its medicinal properties) is in the Asteraceae family (the same as some of your favorite radicchio!) Crisp and sweet, its texture and flavor is reminiscent of lotus. Braised, roasted, mashed, or fried, you’ll find Burdock in many forms on some of Portland’s most acclaimed restaurants. Ready to try something new? Make it Burdock from our friends at @wobblycartfarm by @rubinetteproduce
Beyond fruits and veg
You’ll find a selection of pantry, snacking and baking items sourced from our lovely local producers at Rubinette. Many options are shelf stable and fantastic to have on-hand through out the year. These items are tucked around the department in the cold case, on shelves and among produce displays— a veritable scavenger hunt of good stuff! Here’s a few of our faves, starting with Maple syrup sourced by @flyingcoyotefarm Available in both dark and amber options, you’ll find these delicious jars in our cold case near the juice! Our friends at @osohoneyfarm produce the best varietal honey around! Select from squeezies, pint jars or 5 lb jugs! And don’t forget the honeycomb for a delightful addition to cheese boards and baking! @kiyokawafamilyorchards apple cider is a sensational, seasonal offering we look forward to each year. Choose from Honeycrisp or Mixed apple! Craving something effervescent? Organic Orchards sparkling cider is super tasty! It’s also a great NA option in a gorgeous bottle you’ll feel great about gifting or bringing to a gathering. Snacks for lunch boxes or the desk drawer are delicious, local and healthy thanks to Fruit Tree. These certified organic cherries are grown and dried in Hood River, and brought to us by the same good folks that own and operate @oregonbrineworks They’re also phenomenal in baked goods! Nuts! For baking, snacking and salad making! This time of year, we can’t get over how delicious the locally grown roasted Hazelnuts and chestnuts taste! In addition to house-dried peppers sourced from our local growers, we’re thrilled to offer even more varieties grown and packed by @hayshakerfarm Having these on hand is a great kitchen hack. Blitz them into a powder for a zesty popcorn seasoning, drop them into soups and stews for big time flavor or use them to take sauces to the next level! Popcorn from @sungoldfarmboy is grown in Forest Grove, and that’s a locally grown snack to get excited about. We are mere weeks away from holiday decorating season, so plan to pop a big bowl for munching on while you string them about the house! The chorus singing the praises of beans is getting louder! A wonderful so by @rubinetteproduce
Costarossa radicchio The most recent variety to join the radicchio party at Rubinette, this stunnner is grown by the good folks at @wobblycartfarm Part of the Verona family of Chicorum, this deeply saturated type bears some resemblances to its parent, namely its torpedo-shaped top. But its unforgettable color helps Costarossa stand out from the rest! Typically on the more bitter end of the scale, we are solidly on team celebrate it! Pair Costarossa with other bold flavors and fats. Cheese! Yellow raisins! Tangy apples! Capers! Pickled alliums! GO ALL IN! But, if you’re bitter-averse, this is a radicchio you can consider soaking in an ice bath before preparing. Cooking also helps temper Costarossa’s bite. This bitter beauty is just one of TEN other radicchio types available at Rubinette right now, with more on the way. Get over here! by @rubinetteproduce
There’s simply too much to say about each of the 8 squash featured in this reel! Want to know more? Let’s talk about it! For example, did you know Lower River Salmon squash is specifically adapted to Idaho and Oregon? Or that the Thelma Sanders is named after the gardeners from Missouri that first shared its seeds with Seed Savers Exchange. Or that this variety is listed in the Slow Food Ark of Taste!? There’s SO much to say! Drop your questions or fun facts in the comments and then swing by and pick up a squash or two— our local growers thank you! by @rubinetteproduce
