I shall not set aside the childish things that bring me joy 💖

I had so much fun putting all this together. All inspired by the most precious princess hat sent to me by the beautiful @delights_world It needed a whole tea party with puffy dresses and frills and pretty dolls 🏹

Princess hat with tulle handmade by @delights_world
Secondhand puffy frilly dress & shoes
William Morris tights from @tabbisocks
Yellow tulle 50s gloves
Dolls and tea sets and pomp collected over 46 years of side quests searching for pretties.

What did you enjoy as a child that you wish you had time for or could do again? A woman with ginger hair in a pink tulle dress and patterned tights sits among vintage dolls, tea sets, and hats in a whimsical room. by @rubyrouxbijou

Wearing a red heart hat, puff sleeves, and heart tights, I'm basically Cupid's slightly chaotic cousin.
My pink cane adds an extra flair, as does my floral archway that I totally didn't arrange to make my neighbors jealous." by @rubyrouxbijou

Hiking up to the top of hills in party dresses & heels because I can now 💘

I’m 43 and disabled and I feel a freedom & joy I never expected

My family chipped in to get me this stunning @selkie dress for my dream moment of making it up to the top of a hill in my new @trekinetic wheelchair. We headed to #DinasBran and none of it disappointed. #mytrekinetic got me up all those great big Welsh hills, and although I didn’t go to the top where the castle was as I got tired out taking these pics on this trip. That will be another adventure to see the castle ruins. And another dress!

I felt amazing wearing a @selkie puff dress @dollskill heels and these 90s looking shades. I had a brief moment where I thought am I too old to dress like this now then I laughed at myself in the mirror!

I think the locals are getting used to seeing me kicking about now in my unique style. I don’t blend in at all 🤣

Wearing a blue organdy puff babydoll dress with platform blue & gold ornate boots and bb blue rectangle glasses. Pic 2 same but super hero pose on the crest of a hill. Pic 3 same but sideways pic on top of hill in distance. Pic 4 gorgeous pumpkin trekinetic wheelchair looking all glorious}

Fashion isn’t just about how we express ourselves.
Sometimes it’s about how we protect ourselves too.

This carousel is a collection of things I’ve learned as a disabled woman who dresses loudly, rolls proudly, and has accidentally run over more feet than I’d care to admit.

I’d love to hear what you’ve learned too. 💛♿ A photo of Rue sitting in her all-terrain wheelchair in a wildflower meadow wearing a pale yellow tulle dress and pastel blue platform heels. She poses with one arm behind her head beneath a bright blue sky. Text reads: “How fashion accidentally became my social armour. My guide to dressing fabulously as a disabled person.” by @rubyrouxbijou

Challenging perceptions around beauty and disability this disability pride month

Say goodbye to medical looking mobility aids and hello to this pink icon by @myroamate an electric wheelchair & rollator

Tell me how fed up you are hearing “what happened to you” and get ready to hear “wow it’s pink, where did you get it” instead. A woman with bright curly red hair sits confidently in a pink electric wheelchair in front of a pastel pink summer house. She wears a cream floral trouser suit over a green camisole, chunky cream platform heels and white cat-eye sunglasses. Lavender planters frame the summer house, echoing the pink wheelchair and colourful floral print. by @rubyrouxbijou

It matters what you wear in the heat 🕊️

Best fashion advice I’ve heard. Wear white cotton or linen when it’s hot. And a big hat - no more painful sunburn on your neck.
I’m not one to tell folks what not to wear but black and polyester in this heatwave is just making it harder for you to get cool

How are you staying cool in this heat? Do you have dogs? How are you keeping them cool/entertained if you can’t go on walks?

I’m exactly who I think I am ♿️

Disability has a way of stripping away the things you thought mattered.
You spend so much time adapting, reflecting and rebuilding that eventually you become very difficult to convince you’re someone you’re not.

That’s one of the quiet gifts Disability Pride has given me.

Share disabled baddies this month and make them visible for #DisabilityPride A disabled woman with long curly red hair poses confidently between two vintage fairground rocking horses in a wildflower meadow. She wears an orange and cream striped two piece shorts set with a lace collar, a matching pleated bonnet, white cat-eye sunglasses and orange heels. Someone wrote recently about dressing for the female gaze and it’s been rattling around my brain ever since.

But I don’t really get dressed for anyone else.

I dress for the version of me that wanted these vintage Prada shoes in the 90s. For my love for weird little 2d handbags. For the beauty of muumuus rescued and remade into shirts instead of thrown away. For pink bloomers hidden underneath because they make me grin. For sitting in or out of my wheelchair. For me.

If anyone else enjoys it? Even better.

Maybe that’s why my little corner of the internet found the susty fashion lovers, the vintage obsessives, the maximalists, the gays, the theys, and everyone who likes life with the weird turned up. I’m certainly not everyone’s cup of tea but I’m fine with that. Finally.

Who do you dress for?

See my stories for Arti’s @sideways_toupee post about the female gaze. It’s really good.

Disability Pride for me means taking up space. Being visible.
In the dress. In the wheelchair. In the world.

Mobility aids are freedom dressed as function.
And frankly, they can look good too. Because disability doesn’t erase fashion. It just makes it more interesting.

Happy Disability Pride to everyone because it’s something we all need to recognise together!

July so far 💚 🐝🐾

The garden is lush and I’m practising camouflaging with this tree in a gorge summer dress by @frocktalesltd with a clever stretchy label to grow & change with you!

The wasps have taken over my garden but we’ve made a pact I get to keep the nest when they leave.

Ernie made his debut in the world and we can’t wait to introduce him to his big bro Bert Bert in September 🥹 A woman with bright curly red hair stands in a lush garden beneath a tree with copper and green leaves. Testing the Paiseec W1 in my 1815 cottage which was not built with accessibility in mind.

Can your mobility aids fit throughout your house? Or is it a daily boss battle?
