✨Announcement✨ As the year winds down, I’m super excited to announce that ‘The Kingfishers’ has been selected for the Young Masters Exhibition 2025, which will take place in January at The Exhibitionist Hotel, London.

Curated by @cynthiacorbettgallery, the exhibition is themed ‘For the Love of Art History’, and is the 16th year of @youngmastersartprize. This exhibition will reflect Cynthia’s lifelong passion for the Old Masters, cultural diversity, and the rich legacy of art from the past. by @rubytaglightldn

Albedo, the second stage of ancient alchemy, depicted by a Swan. Indicating an initial spiritual encounter, the Swan represents the beginning of transformation. The birds rarely fly, rather they skim on the surface of the water, and so are seen as creatures that balance on the boundary of the physical body and the soul.

This piece was made using the lost wax casting process- I carved the entire piece by hand, and cast into bronze. Each piece screws together.

This piece will be on show for the first time @cockpitstudios Winter Open Studios, starting 23rd November. Link in bio for more information. by @rubytaglightldn

A little throwback to the first large scale piece I made- The Joker is made up of hand carved women, and was cast as a whole piece in bronze. The court joker walked a fine line between jest and offence. Given a royal pardon to speak their mind, they often became a trusted ally, but would inevitably overstep the mark, leading in many cases to their death. The ‘cap and bells’ hat refers to a donkey ears and tail; a flimsy colourful fabric which has a stark contrast to a solid royal crown. This piece straddles both, celebrating the contradiction. by @rubytaglightldn

The Cockpit A to Z of Craft: L is for Lost Wax Casting🕯️

Welcome to our 40th Anniversary content series, where every week for 40 weeks we showcase a different craft discipline found at Cockpit Studios. This week the spotlight is on @rubytaglightldn and the craft of lost wax casting.

Lost wax casting is a 6,500-year-old metalworking technique used in making intricate jewellery, sculpture, and ornaments. The process involves carving an original model from wax, clay, or another material before creating a rigid outer mould, made from an investment powder, whereby the original wax model is melted out, leaving a hollow space for molten metal to be poured in and creating a one-of-a-kind cast object.

Ruby specialises in the ancient process of lost wax casting, reinterpreting historical narratives as contemporary wearables and interior objects. Relying on human interaction to bring the tales to life, fastening a clasp, pulling a drawer handle, the human hand becomes intertwined in the story, celebrating the importance of myths in our modern lives.

Ruby creates contemporary relics, inviting the viewer to physically explore the work, initiating child-like wonder. Her pieces focus on storytelling, looking to myths that have survived centuries. The act of casting a hand-carved wax form into permanent metal gives the narratives a renewed sense of purpose.

Ruby has a background in Fine Art, training as a painter at the Glasgow School of Art. She is a qualified gemmologist, and now works from her London workshop, based in Cockpit Bloomsbury.

Falling bouquet earrings. Inspired by Dutch flower paintings of the 17th century, arrangements would often be painted containing flowers which would not bloom at the same time, given the ephemeral nature of the flora, resulting in an impossible bouquet. In these earrings, each flora moves independently, coming together to create a falling bouquet with a life of its own. by @rubytaglightldn

Á mon seul désir, inspired by the sixty Cluny tapestry. Throughout history the meaning of these tapestries have been the subject of debate. Five tapestries show the subject acting out scenes which could represent the five senses, a mirror to show sight, for example. The sixth tapestry is more mysterious, and has been theorised the mean an assertion of free will.

The lady is depicted, at first glance, as pulling a single necklace from a casket. On closer inspection, she is using both hands, showing that it must be a heavier adornment, perhaps a marriage belt. She is also holding her veil, a sign of virginity, in one hand- grinding our gaze to an item she will soon be taking off, once she is wed. There is some understanding, by the Musée de Cluny, that the lady is actually putting the belt back in the casket, and hence ridding herself of this possession, a sign of autonomy.

This box is a place to put intimate objects. By using the drawers one is placing themselves into the sixth tapestry, taking out or returning precious items, and I invite the user to take wonder in this mysterious artefact. by @rubytaglightldn
