Sunset cruise for the 2002 Klein Attitude Comp in this temporary configuration before it gets taken apart.

I had never really considered an aluminium frame since I started riding steel track bikes in 2013 but this year at Bespoked I got to chatting with Uncle Ronnie, and his take on the ugly duckling of framebuilding materials made me want to give it another go. A Ron’s Bikes EVOO was still a bit beyond reach, so I kept an eye out for a vintage option that could be encouraged the way of his Klein Pinnacle chubby road bike (see Ultraromance, 2024, on YouTube for this example).

This one in “Plum Crazy” eventually came up for sale and I couldn’t say no — the more iconic linear fade Klein paint jobs were never to my taste but the later colour-shifting finishes truly scratch a chromatophilic itch in me. The prismatic finish goes from deep purple to a bronzish burgundy as it catches light from different angles, and the layers of paint sit atop buttery smooth TIG-welded joints, as opposed to the unsightly dime-stack welds of most mass produced aluminium frames from that era, so there was no need to come around to the frame aesthetically speaking.

Throwing on a decal-matching @edwanbao segmented raw steel fork certainly helped its visual case further. A few rides in, however, and I feel the lightweight aluminium tubing yearning for a lighter front end, and who am I to deny this? Disc brake adapter from Sellution Components might be a bit of a clue as to what’s next, but no cheeky closeups aside from that this time since almost all these parts are going straight on another build... What started as a quick wheelset swap turned into a full cockpit and drivetrain overhaul.

⚙️ Sold the old wheels purely for aesthetics (color balance is non-negotiable).
⚙️ Bagged a mint-condition Mason x Hunt 650B Adventure wheelset for a steal.
⚙️ Fitted Galfer rotors & went back to all-black Teravail tires. (Sorry tan walls, black looks way too mean).
⚙️ Fought for 20 minutes against tire sealant that turned into actual cement.
⚙️ Replaced my GRX RD and ditched the Garbaruk cage.
(Tired & frustrated, damaged my old RD while wrestling with my rear wheel).
⚙️ Dropped down to a Sunshine 11-42t cassette.
⚙️ Reach fixed: Switched Thomson stem from 70 to 90mm and back on Ritchey Corralitos drop bars.

Indexing dialed, test ride completed.
Now the bike finally feels right ✔️

Word of advice: if you’re working past midnight and getting annoyed, just walk away. by @ruck.rack

Baru beres ganti wheelset rakitan BPJS (Budget Polygon Jiwa Surly) mencoba biar terlihat kalcer pake ban tanwall, Wispy Error 26x??? alias 26x2.125. Drivetrain masih bawaan pabrik cuma diganti shifter aja pake Shimano TY31 3x6 speed. Bagian depan diisi Kenbike Rise Bar bertemu Oury Grip, ditambah Ruckrack biar kelihatan makin manis.

Sementara gini aja dulu, yang penting sepedanya bisa kepake buat Bike2Ngopi sama belanja ke pasar. 😄
