Ambedkar Jayanti 4.14.26 endogamy Greek: endo -> within + gamos -> marriage the cultural practice of only marrying within a specific social group, religious denomination, caste or ethnic group, rejecting any from outside of the group or belief structure as unsuitable for marriage or other close personal relationships jāti endogamy a foundational structure of the caste system, where marriage is restricted to one’s own jāti (sub-caste), a violent practice central to maintaining caste hierarchy May 9, 1916 25 year old doctoral student, B.R. Ambedkar, presented his 18 page paper at Columbia University, NYC on the study of the nature of caste. The paper’s main argument evaluates endogamy; the prohibition of intermarriage as the central characteristic & essence of caste. He viewed satī, enforced widowhood & child marriage as customs primarily intended to solve the problem of “surplus women & men” within a caste to maintain its endogamy. He treated class & caste as neighbours, saying that “a caste is an Enclosed Class”. This paper laid the groundwork for Annihilation of Caste, where Dr. Ambedkar systematically argued that caste is not only a social division but a fundamental obstacle to India’s progress & that it cannot be abolished through social reform alone; it requires challenging the religious texts that authorize hierarchy because caste is theologically grounded in certain śāstras. You cannot abolish caste without questioning & practicing non attachment to the religious authority of certain scriptures that sanction it.
