Kila کیلا means banana, but Akila اکیلا means alone. Both sound the same except for the prefixed aliph in ‘alone’.

“Blood sheds from my sword” - this piece entails many different things for me. The first being about taking the emotional power back from colonial rule that inhabited the Indian subcontinent for 200 years and the subsequent marks that particularly south Asian (SA) women carry as a result of cultural, historical and generational trauma. The female body is always placed as being either despised or desired; in south Asian context, despised for being sexually liberated and then sexually repressed OR desired within the male gaze and so brutalised and forced into submission, all as by products of imposed histories of patriarchy and colonialism which perpetuated troubled attitudes of Orientalism in SA. Now the second, a more personal touch, I’ve always been conflicted as a Pakistani growing up in Britain, i had mostly western influences which I embrace but I also have south asian heritage first that I also want to embrace and so I used to be stuck in the binary of either/or but getting older I realise I can be BOTH, accepting both identities instead of rejecting one for the other. so I wanted to reconstruct SA female sexuality where one doesn’t have to be either/or but she can be both. Thus the pre-colonial Mughal style painting of the face, jewellery and head scarf mixed with the modern composition of the nude body reflects the connection to history and roots while still taking ownership of the body and therefore identity. The blood-like prints add a double meaning 1- the blood of thousands of south asians ancestors who died at the hands of yt colonisers 2- menstrual blood to suggest rebirth and new release of SA female sexuality. - cartridge paper, Acrylics, ink, Gouache, Oil Pastel, charcoal, printing with a lemon. “You are not a girl, you are a sword”
