A small shift for me recently. A niggle has taken me out of running for a while, so I’ve started building something instead.

It’s called Blood, Sweat & Cheers. It’s about recognising the effort behind running, not just the results. The training, the setbacks, and the people around it.

I’ve started with a series of prints and cards to mark those moments. If you know someone who’s put the work in, I think you’ll get it.

✨ And just like that, Nova is FIVE. ✨

What an eventful year — from nursery toddler to big girl at school in the blink of an eye.

“Graduation, graduation celebrate! Yip-peee!”

The journey towards school has been so natural, driven by your eagerness to learn. Your progress with numbers, letters, language and memory has been impressive — just like your knack for geography.

You showed me up at uShaka Aquarium: I pointed to a rainbow-coloured crustacean, ready to explain its powerful punch, and you cut me off — “Mantis Shrimp.”
I was stumped.

But it’s your developing sense of humour and wit that’s been the most remarkable.
While watching The Sound of Music — when Maria and Von Trapp first kiss — you exclaimed, as any four-year-old might, “Eewwwww!”
Then, after a pause, pivoted with the dry tone of someone three times your age:
“Not a fan of that.”

You live for the moment, idiosyncrasies and all. While it sometimes drives us mad (getting you ready or managing an “ouchie” in the bath), your enthusiasm and playfulness remind us what life is about.

The way you show generosity, love, and affection to the people you care about is what makes you so special.

Happy Birthday, Nova Nunu. ❤️

Our girl is FOUR.

Sometimes it seems like fourteen. From the growth spurt, grasp of language, and the development of more than a hint of attitude, we’re often left flabbergasted.

You’re not only generous to your friends and family, you’re also considerate to new people you meet. The way you’ve gained physical confidence this year has helped you flourish – from losing the fear of washing hair, riding a scooter and tearing around the playground. As a people person you always want to be sociable, otherwise you’ll “be only”. While you love dressing up (mostly dresses and as many skirts as you can put on at once) you’re often eager to shed down to the birthday suit, no matter how cold it is! 
We love your dancing, singing (maybe not so much when only know one line of a song), drawing and enthusiasm to put on a show, “make things”, or play David Bowie’s Starman. You cajole us into role play and when we don’t always manage to follow the specificity of the scriptless intent, you’re not scared to direct with an iron fist! As a Baby Brother you’ve been very helpful to teach me every conceivable daily task (like brushing teeth and washing hands) – all the things you’ve learned as a Big Sister.   While you can parade peak toddler obstinance, you often sprinkle your charm to make us laugh. More than once when we’ve explained why you should refrain from a certain action or or behaviour, you’ve retorted with the final line of the Amelia Earhart book:
“If you want to do something do it, you never know how far you could get!”

I’ve travelled to the Arctic Circle with an array of camera equipment to capture the Aurora Borealis. It was cloudy for the entire week.
