A great privilege to support Kate Newby on ‘The Sound of Trees’.

Kate and I first worked together ten years ago on a commission for a bronze door handle cast from one of her early ceramic pieces. Within our respective practices, we share an appreciation for how traces of geological activity shape the materials we work with, and how these processes are deeply invested in interiority while remaining grounded in the natural world.

‘The Sound of Trees’ is a permanent public artwork at Portland International Airport (PDX) and one of Newby’s most ambitious projects to date. Spanning 75 feet and comprising more than 1,600 handmade ceramic tiles, the installation was developed over several years through collecting, making, glazing, firing, and installation.

These details reflect Kate’s long-standing interest in material, place, and the quiet traces left through making, inviting closer looking within a place so often defined by movement.

With thanks to an incredible team: Kate Newby, Rob Halverson, Michael Lett, Andrew Thomas, Jim Barr & Mary Barr, Binh Minh Ha, ZGF Architects, KPFF, the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), and the Port of Portland.
