House Cross Country 2025

Yesterday the whole school took to Springhill for our annual 4.5km House Cross Country.

The event celebrated athletic endeavour at its best: music blaring, the sun shining, and students from all fifteen Houses pushing themselves every step of the way.

It was fantastic to have so many staff out on the course supporting and marshalling. A brilliant afternoon at Rugby School.

House Singing 2026

On Saturday evening, the School filled the Temple Speech Room for this year’s House Singing competition, with all 15 Houses taking to the stage to compete for the title of House Singing champions.

There were 17 performances in total, as our Day Houses performed in two groups. From Whitney Houston and Wham! to S Club 7 and Lou Bega, there was something for everyone to enjoy. This year’s theme was ‘dance’, inspiring an evening of energy and impressive musical performances.

After a closely contested competition, the results were announced. In the Girls’ House category, Southfield - Beesley took first place with their performance of ‘Better When I’m Dancing’ by Meghan Trainor.

In the Boys’ House category, Cotton claimed victory with their rendition of ‘Dance with Me Tonight’ by Olly Murs. The win marked a remarkable fifth consecutive House Singing title for Cotton, meaning the current XX cohort has never experienced defeat in the competition.

Congratulations to all the Houses and every student who performed!

Upper School Academic Scholars Trip to London

Today, our Upper School (Sixth Form) students travelled from Rugby to London for their Academic Scholars Trip. The group split into two, with one focusing on STEM and the other on Humanities.

The STEM-focused group visited the Science Museum before spending the afternoon at the Natural History Museum. Meanwhile, the Humanities-focused group enjoyed a guided tour of Tudor and Stuart London, followed by an afternoon at the iconic British Museum.

The trip forms part of Rugby School’s Academic Scholars and Enrichment Programme, providing students with opportunities to deepen their subject knowledge, broaden their perspectives and explore their academic interests beyond the classroom.

Coffee Concerts are a staple in the Rugby School Music Calendar, and they always deliver something special. Hattie performed Pretty Flower by Kerin Bailey in this morning’s Coffee Concert, our third of the term.

Well done to our other performers Seth and Valentina for fantastic performances each!

Ismael reaches Senior Final of BBC Young Chorister of the Year

Congratulations to Rugby School student Ismael, who has reached the Senior Final of the BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2026 competition.

Ismael joined Rugby School from @stpaulscathedralschool as a Music Scholar, bringing with him a strong musical foundation and a passion for choral singing. Reaching the final of one of the UK’s most prestigious competitions for young singers is a significant achievement and reflects his dedication, talent and hard work.

Reflecting on his success, Ismael said:

“Getting to the final meant so much to me, having put so much time into my craft. Being at the semi-final was already a massive achievement to me, so being a step past it was something truly special, and will be an experience that stays with me my whole life.”

Tansy Castledine, our Director of Music, said:

“Reaching the Senior Final of the BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2026 is a tremendous achievement, and we are very pleased for Ismael. He is an exceptional singer, combining his musicality with expressive communication and technical skill. His performances consistently demonstrate maturity and a deep understanding of the choral tradition, and this recognition is richly deserved. We wish him every success in the final.”

Everyone at Rugby School congratulates Ismael on this outstanding achievement and wishes him the very best for the final.

The Rugby Way

Rugby School has developed a distinctive approach to teaching: The Rugby Way.

‌Students learn around round tables in classes of no more than 14, creating an environment where every student is encouraged to engage, contribute, challenge ideas and think deeply.

‌The Rugby Way is built on three clear principles:

- Preparation for learning

- Learning through collaboration

- Challenging thinking

‌Hear from our Head Master, Gareth Parker-Jones, as he explains how this distinctive approach to teaching prepares students for the world beyond school.

A wonderful afternoon for members of the Rugby School computer science society, who were invited to Rugby Town Hall to meet the Mayor of Rugby following their success in the Astro Pi Mission competition, which saw their code run on the International Space Station.

Students had the opportunity to learn more about the Mayor’s role and discuss the importance of innovation, while sharing how they used Physics, Geometry and Mathematics to develop their projects and send code into space.

The visit included a tour of the Town Hall and the Mayor’s Parlour, followed by tea and cake before the students entered the debating chamber.

Thank you to the Mayor of Rugby for welcoming our students and celebrating this outstanding achievement.
