Join us on Thursday, October 29 as multidisciplinary artist Rujuta Rao will test a new form, the “garment-essay,” a wearable publication and performance that brings together her research into fermentation across natural dyeing, brewing and distillation, and the processing of plant materials into textiles and paper. The essay considers wild fermentation, an uncontrolled process in which microorganisms present in a place transform materials in ways that cannot be standardized or fully controlled.

During the 30–40-minute performance, Rao’s essay will be read from an indigo-dyed garment worn by performer Rebecca Mzengi Corey @rebeccamzengicorey, while feni is served to the audience. Following the reading, garments from Rao’s clothing line, RUGA @rugaproject, will be available for browsing.

Gave a guest lecture at @parsonsschoolofdesign in the Department of Printmaking and Book Arts, in the printshop and bindery, a perfect setting! Such a pleasure to speak at Parsons twice last week. Thank you @scarlettxmeng for inviting me to this one, and thank you to the students for so generously sharing their own work with me. taken in Parsons School of Design by @rujutarao

“Mother” is now in the Special Collections at Shields Library, UC Davis, my first West Coast collection. I’m grateful to the librarians who initiated this acquisition.

“Mother” is a 28-page, riso-printed accordion fold wearable book, made in an edition of 30. The accordion folds allow the book to expand and accommodate a range of sizes. The image, fragmented across the book in a lenticular manner, cannot be grasped all at once but can be gradually perceived as the book is turned around the wrist. taken in UC Davis by @rujutarao

I’ll present a performative reading of my essay-garment at @initialresearch on Saturday, September 26th, performed by @qianfan, whom I am grateful to work with. Thank you to @amikoli for the invitation as part of his new initiative @artist.visits, and to the @initialresearch team for supporting the program. I’m thrilled to be in the company of @xu6ing and @jylllllll___.

The essay Steeping in The Hollow (2026) was written while immersed in @iatp_nyc. Paired with the modular garment Sectional Vest (@rugaproject, 2026), it forms a hybrid essay-garment that annotates the body.

🗓️ Saturday, September 26, 6:00—8:00 PM
41 Wooster Street, Floor 2, New York, NY

Repost from @initialresearch ~
Join us for an evening of performance organized by our current fellow Amiko Li (@amikoli), in collaboration with Tianran Qian (@_tianran_), featuring artists Jiaoyang Li (@jylllllll___), Sixing Xu (@xu6ing), and Rujuta Rao (@rujutarao).

In New York, time and space are often closely tied to currency and productivity. This performance program brings together three artists whose practices challenge conventional forms of artmaking through subtitles and translation, wearable poetry, and performative investigation.

Moving beyond the production of material objects, their works consider bodies, language, and lived experiences as sites of exploration, imagining new ways of thinking about time, labor, and value.

During the evening, Amiko will introduce 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀 (@artist.visits), a new platform connecting artists, patrons, and curious art viewers through studio visits and encounters in New York and Shanghai.
