See Dorothy Knowles and William Perehudoff on view at the Remai Modern until January 24th, 2027. Forecast is an exhibition that contemplates the relationships between people, their environments and the changing climate.

Changes in weather are impacting our daily lives. Forecast invites audiences to reflect on their own memorable weather experiences and meaningful places in nature. By evoking memory and sharing stories, the exhibition attempts to connect issues of climate change to personal experience and explore the historical, social, and political dynamics of our changing environment.

Dorothy Knowles worked alongside Kenneth Noland whom influenced her approach towards applying paint in thin veils of shimmering hues. As seen in Wind on the River, Knowles takes notes from David Milne's approach to the picture plane, and the importance of white space in the composition. Over the following decades, she developed a painterly approach grounded in established compositional traditions while informed by the direct observation and fluid handling associated with plein air painting.

Visit Rukaj Gallery from October 8th to November 5th to see Big Sky, an exhibition of paintings by Saskatchewan painter Dorothy Knowles (1927-2023) made between the years 1963 to 2021. These works, including watercolour, paintings, and the rare appearance of charcoal drawings, display Knowles’s strong sense of space, temperature, light, and line. by @rukaj.gallery

"Dorothy imprinted the character of the day on her work. It wasn’t just a sense of space, it was a sense of being there," Robert Christie explains about Knowles’s uncanny ability to paint the air. “Is the air warm, cool, is there a breeze, can you smell the trees? She put the viewer right beside her.”

Rukaj Gallery is pleased to announce Shawn Evans' first solo presentation in Toronto. Join us for the opening reception on November 12th from 6-8 pm.

Based on a single photograph taken during his residency at the Banff Centre for Arts, Shawn Evans (Canadian, b. 1986) has been developing a distinct and highly nuanced series of paintings that engage with chronological time, grounded questions of representation, limits of perception, and the status of images in the contemporary world. The Quantum Sky series explores the Albertan landscape through iterative works across mediums. Evan’s recalls a rich tradition of landscape painting, yet through sustained engagement one realizes he has developed alongside a more contemplative and conceptual axis. The work explores Canada’s landscape painting tradition and asks what that legacy can look like today. Evans completed his BFA at the Alberta University of the Arts in 2009.
