There’s a lie we protect at all costs: that motherhood should feel good enough to erase everything else.

I wrote about what actually happens when women are trapped in high-stakes relationships and motherhood becomes a constraint rather than a choice.

This is not about hating children.
It’s about how resentment forms when agency disappears — and why pretending otherwise keeps women stuck.

The home is where it all starts. Get it right there and it spills into every space we call “work.”

People don’t become considerate, accountable, or grounded by accident. Every society you see out there is built from the behaviours rehearsed in living rooms, kitchens, and quiet moments at home.

The person who cuts you off in traffic (even damaging your car in the process) and keeps grandstanding learned that pattern somewhere. The home manufactures the participants of the larger economy, and like any system, the quality of the parts shapes the quality of the whole.

One day my son said, “Mummy, the way you call my name makes me think I have done something wrong.”

That statement took me back over 25 years back when I said to my dad, “Anytime you say Tayoooooo!!! I always think I am in trouble.”

My dad did not stop sha.🙃🙃

He will call my name so sternly, only to ask me to bring him some water or pass the remote.

From that moment, I stopped yelling my son’s name and instead moved closer or sent one of his siblings to call him.

I don’t know when I became a pleaser.

But I found this result slip from when I was 3 years old.

“Obeys simple instructions.”
“Colours nicely.”
“Very satisfactory.”

And I thought - what if I had seen more of this over the years?
What if, when I lost myself, I could’ve looked back and remembered who I was before I started performing to be loved?

Before I confused obedience with worthiness.

I’m keeping this now - not for nostalgia, but as a compass.

And I’m archiving everything my kids create - their drawings, thoughts, quirks, results, because I want them to always have something to return to when the world tries to make them forget who they are.

Sometimes, we don’t need to become new.
We just need to come back home.
