Larry Levan, legendary DJ and resident of the iconic NYC nightclub Paradise Garage, would have been 71 years old today.

Larry was the heart and identity of Paradise Garage, curating the blueprint for how turntables should be worked on a dance floor. He didn’t create mixing, but he elevated it in the 1970s. Coming in during the reign of disco and witnessing its demise, Larry continued to usher in early house, new wave, synth-pop, his own remixes, and other genres throughout his sets in the 1980s.

I like to call Larry Levan the “Blueprint” of what being a DJ at a dance club is and what club culture is at its essence. The Loft, Paradise Garage, The Warehouse, and, as an honorable mention, Music Box (R.I.P. Ron Hardy), all laid the foundation for every underground club scene and dance genre that followed. Techno, acid, jungle, DnB, breakbeat, UK garage, and more can all be traced back to what Larry curated in the 1970s through the atmosphere of Paradise Garage.

Happy birthday to Larry as his influence and impact remains still present til this day.

Big thanks to the DJs that performed for our first Serious about Sound event with @arcadiasoundsystem. They’re flying the flag for Chicago underground music.

For the first Serious About Sound event, it only felt right to start in the nucleus of house music. Chicago gave us the perfect room to begin this movement properly.

Thank you to everybody who came through, danced with us and helped shape the atmosphere from start to finish. Big love to all the DJs, the venue and everyone behind the scenes who made the night possible. ❤️❤️🥹

Chapter one complete.
