In 2024, a dear friend asked us “let’s go to Iceland in August 2026 to see witness the solar eclipse in totality!” At the time, it was like a dream but I couldn’t see that far ahead in the future to commit to anything.

So glad that conversation happened, and 2 years later life created an opportunity to make that dream come true, and make it happen with friends.

But life is complicated, eh? As we finished our first week of chasing fosses (waterfall in Icelandic) we heard about the wildfire back home.
Here we are gathered to witness a solar eclipse in its totality where daytime turns into a silent night on this volcanic island, and on the other side of the world, there is a raging fire close to home… Standing under a sky gone dark in the middle of the day, I felt how small we are against forces like that.

My body, mind, and heart were all in different places.

During the eclipse gathering, @astrochuie had a fantastic fun talk about awe. Specially around the overview effect. I am an awe-chaser, if that’s a word I can make up ✨

Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell used the phrase “explosion of awareness” to describe his life-changing epiphany of universal interconnection while viewing Earth from space in 1971. Overview effect is a strong sense of the interconnectedness of life and the arbitrariness of political/national borders and an increased environmental concern, seeing the thin atmosphere and realizing how fragile it looks from space.

I believe we are capable of experiencing the overview effect all around us. There is so much freaking beauty and awe in this planet that is both so powerful as well as fragile. We don’t need to leave the planet to see how much it deserves protecting 💙

It’s been an absolutely emotional couple of weeks here for us Summerlanders.

We just watched a wildfire come close to everything I’m about to describe, and I’m still finding the right words, but here’s what I’ve got.

I just freaking love living here.

It reminds me of my childhood in the Mediterranean, in Turkey.
Swimming in clear water, picking fruit straight off the trees, long tables with family and amazing friends where conversation turns into hugs after hours of food and wine…so freaking good 🫶
Here in Summerland, food is connected to the land, and sharing it is part of the soul of this place.

Also, gosh I love having 4 proper seasons!
After years in LA, I don’t take the seasons for granted anymore. Watching the leaves turn, then the snow come in, then the blossoms open in spring! Seeing those first Okanagan cherries come to life in May 🤩

I love being close to animals again.
Wild horses and deer on the trails where we hike. Fainting goats cruising on the streets with Greg the goat guy. Bears munching their way through the orchard fruit in late summer (so much fruit poop!) Oh, also I get to hang out with the coolest pigs and the cutest dogs. 🥰

And this town says hi! like eye contact, hi!
Not everyone agrees on everything, but there’s a kindness underneath the disagreement, room for people to be uniquely peculiar and still belong.

You can take the girl out of Istanbul, but apparently you can’t take the Istanbullu out of the girl. I live rooted in nature here, orchards, mountains and the lake and 15mins later I can be at the airport, boom, gone wherever.

That’s the whole trick of this place.

Come to Ireland for the sunshine said no one ever ☀️😁
Just a couple of day road trippin around, felt the warmth of the people here as we drove between coastal towns on tiny tiny roads. Grateful for dipping into the Atlantic and the Irish Sea, pints of Guinness and the incredible hospitality of @limonabug and @cianopix ❤️
Cant wait to come back.

First time in Österreich 🇦🇹 with @pansensory

Broke my shoes on day two and it was still a perfect week.

So much work has been done to keep these epic cathedrals, buildings in impeccable shape 😳 w.o.w.z.a.

Absolutely grateful for the cold lake and river swims on hoooot days 💙

Lovely time and many beers with my dearest cuz @ilyasheckmann, old friends, and new ones ❤️

Watched Messi missed his penalty 🇦🇷 but won anyway…😬

And @fatfreddysdropnz absolutely rocked Wien 🤙🇳🇿

Canim Turkiyem 🇹🇷
My heart and belly are both so full with gratitude, awe and laughter ❤️

Istanbul, my beautiful chaotic hometown, always an adventure, bimbling from one neighborhood to another, witnessing all ways of life, each unique, wonderful and perfectly peculiar. Beautiful mixture of old and new. With my besties. Love you forever and always. 😘

Ankara, the capital. How long has it been since my last school visit? So much history in one place, and those epic sunsets… Paying a visit to Ataturk, the visionary leader of the modern Türkiye. ✨

Hattusah, Yazilikaya, Alacahoyuk. Amazes me that there are still these historic sites in Türkiye that I haven’t been before. Early civilizations from 4000 years ago, the Hitties having Anatolia as their home base, then Romans, then Byzantines and then the Ottomans… 🤯

And Amasya, how charming you are! It was short and sweet but defo be back for more.
