Every film has a deeper feeling at its core. Something we long for, dream of or wish we had more of in our own lives.

I believe that feeling should shape how the film is positioned and what the trailer awakens in its audience.

I explore these feelings through my Emotional Archetypes. You can learn more about them here on my profile, and follow along for more thoughts on emotions, trailers and film marketing. by @runefilm

Meet the World-Builders. This is probably one of the archetypes I personally connect with the most.

I love when a film invites me so deeply into its world that I forget where I am for a while. A world with its own rules, history, culture and mysteries waiting to be discovered.

That feeling of immersion is also what makes World-Builder energy so interesting from a campaign perspective. If the world itself is part of what audiences fall in love with, then the marketing should not only explain the story. It should give us a way into that world.

World-Builders are the seventh of 7 Emotional Archetypes I’ve been developing to explore how we emotionally connect with films and series, and how that emotional energy can drive the campaign.

Meet the Nostalgics. 🕰️ The sixth of 7 Emotional Archetypes I’ve been developing to explore how we emotionally connect with films and series.

Nostalgics are drawn to stories that reconnect us with something familiar. A place, a relationship, a ritual, a memory — something that reminds us where we come from and what still matters.

Not nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. But that quiet feeling of recognition:

“I know this. This is part of me.”

Meet the Escapers. 🌤️

The fifth of 7 Emotional Archetypes I’ve been developing to explore how we emotionally connect with films and series — and how that emotional energy can be the main driver behind a marketing campaign.

Escapers are drawn to films that give us somewhere softer to be for a while.

Warmth. Lightness. Humour. That feeling of the pressure dropping and finally being able to breathe.

Not escape from life — but a little space to return to it with more energy.

Dear filmmakers and original storytellers, please listen up.

I truly believe that one of the reasons it’s so hard for audiences to discover and connect with your films is that most trailers and film campaigns look and feel the same.

Commercial action trailers all follow the same formula.

Corny text slates. Empty one-liners.

And the same goes for comedy. For drama. For thrillers.

Very few trailers dare to show the raw truth of what the film actually feels like.

Instead, they’re shaped to fit the same template, just to make sure they don’t stick out too much.

And yes, some commercial films today are cheap replications of each other. So maybe they don’t always deserve a better trailer.

But interesting arthouse films and original independent films do.

Too often, they’re given the same commercial marketing package.

So they end up looking and feeling the same too.

They blend into one big pool of B-films and mediocrity.

And that makes it almost impossible for the right audience to find them, feel them, and connect with them before the release.

A film isn’t just a genre or a market position.

It’s a deep and unique emotional experience.

For the creators.

And for the audience.

And that is exactly what the campaign should express.

Not a replicated cliché of a genre film.

But a teasing taste of the original emotional experience the film delivers.

So, dear filmmakers, if you’d like to work with an independent creative agency that develops your campaign based on your unique cinematic language and the emotional experience of your film, let’s talk. by @runefilm

Trailr.ai may have just become better than me at understanding the emotional undercurrent of a film❤️
And that matters. Because when developing a marketing campaign, understanding what a film makes us feel is just as important as understanding what happens in it.
The creative decisions are still human. But having an AI co-pilot that genuinely understands emotion is incredibly powerful. by @runefilm

Let’s stop trying to position films based on what we think audiences want.

Let’s start with the core of the film — the feeling, the experience, the story, the message — and let that shape the trailers, the clips and every other campaign element.

Then use audience insight to make sure the campaign reaches the people most likely to connect with it.

That is how a film finds its real audience 💡 by @runefilm

The trailer for Let Sleeping Dogs Lie is out 🙌

And I’m really proud of how the trailer turned out for this remarkable film.

From the beginning, we had a great collaborative process. Not just about telling the story, but about finding the emotional core of the film and translating its feeling, tension and essence into the trailer.

How to let the humour sting, while still keeping the emotional vulnerability alive underneath?

A huge thanks to @plineroenne and @felix.baerwald for the trust and openness to my ideas - and for a great creative collaboration throughout the process.

Congratulations to the whole team at Milk Pictures, and I wish the film all the best on its journey ahead🙏

Meet the Reflectors 🧐 The fourth of 7 Emotional Archetypes I’ve been developing to explore how we emotionally connect with films and series.

Reflectors are drawn to films that shift their perspective. Stories that reveal hidden connections, challenge assumptions and make something suddenly click into place.

Not complexity for the sake of complexity. But that moment when a film makes you think: “Wait… I see this differently now.”
