Inspiring day as I had the privilege of pacing the women's Olympic Trials standard @themicro.run! In all, we had 11 women reach the mark for the 2028 trials.

From a personal standpoint, this was one of the most fun days I have had as a runner. Since retiring from competing I have found immense joy in helping other runners, as I have been helped throughout my career. In the days since the race I have received numerous emails, text messages, and Strava comments from those who I and my fellow elders were able to help. I can't thank those individuals enough for letting me know how their days went and allowing me to share in the excitement they have experienced.

We are two weeks out from @themicro.run! I'll be out there setting the pace for the 2:50 group. Took today's long run to lock in the pace. 3 miles warm up, 9 miles at 6:29, 2 mile cool down for 14 and my longest run in 2 years.

Early morning workout. Haven't run hard in more than two years but did my best to keep Sammy company in her session of 10x90"/90" session. Managed to complete 5 sets.

A new year brings a new home and a new goal. Getting into good enough shape to help the competitors of the @themicro.run in their goal of breaking 3 hours in the marathon!

Forgot my race shoes for the first time in my life. Happy to walk away with the win. The American Tobacco Trail 10 mile. Maybe took this one a little bit too casually, next time I'll pack my bag the night before!

A little longer conversation, but something I feel very passionate about. While this is specifically talking about the #chicagomarathon It can be applied to any race.

We all want to see the finish time on the clock get faster, but it's important to remember that all the hard work you are putting in is not for nothing on a day when conditions are not favorable to fast times. Times. I would even go so far as to argue the opposite. Competing hard and running your best possible race on a day when conditions are less than optimal is an even better indication of a successful training block.
•
Fast racing isn't always about workouts and hard training. Sometimes it just comes down to luck on the day, but your training is there to give yourself the best possible chance to run your best race on the day, regardless of conditions.

A marathon is a unique distance, not because of its duration, but because of how it impacts training. Unlike a 5k, a 10K or even a half marathon, you can't simulate the entire race within the training cycle. So then how do you prepare? The answer is cumulative fatigue. The work that you are doing during the marathon segment is not designed to allow you to run the first half of the marathon on pace. The fitness that you had coming in allows you to do that. The marathon segment trains you to MAINTAIN the pace in the second half of the race.
•
So what does this mean for training? In the cycle, when you feel like you can't maintain the quality sessions that you're doing for a full Marathon, that's exactly the point. Long runs to feel like the first half of a marathon because the first half of a marathon is frankly the easy part. Vz these quality sessions to simulate the second half of the marathon or the part that you can't experience if you're always feeling rested enough to perform.
•
The intricacy of the marathon segment doesn't fall in what you're doing. Simply put you are training your body to run for a really long time. The intricacy comes from structuring training in a way that allows you to experience the hard part of the marathon.

Don't let your ego win. It can be really hard when you're in the middle of the training cycle to see the fact that costing yourself 4 days because you pushed through one day of illness, fatigue, injury is always going to be a net negative. The honest to God truth about the most successful training cycles is that 90% of what happens in them is just good. Good will always be great when good is done with consistency.

Running is hard, and you're not always going to want to go do it. That's not a bad thing and it's not a sign of weakness, it's a sign that you're a human being. That being said, if you give yourself the chance on any given day, 99% of the time, you're going to be really happy that you put in the effort.

Pace zones are created by algorithms. Your body isn't an algorithm. Not everything fits cleanly into a little box while training. Instead listen to what your body is telling you and adjust your training to address your weaknesses.

Effort and Pace are not synonyms. Pace is the guide that we use to get close to the training effort that we are looking to elicit on any given session.
•
However, pace is ultimately affected by a lot of factors outside of your control. Things like the terrain you're running on, the weather that you're running in and that pace needs to be adjusted slightly to ensure that you are eliciting the proper effort.
