So I did a thing.

I went on my first run in three weeks. Getting into the ‘back to school groove’ and getting up before the crack of dawn to run has been a struggle. The dog appreciated it, fwiw. 😎 by @runner_812

We hosted a Bicentennial Party at our home. It’s one of the rare occasions I remember both the Bennett and Cubbage families coming over. I also remember that it was a great party, but I was somewhat upset that I had been sick (and still wasn’t feeling well) that day. Anyway, an amazing reminder of another milestone anniversary of our dysfunctional nation I’m proud to call my (earthly) home.

Medal Monday: A Story….

When I first started running marathons, Christine’s aunt mentioned that they had a race down where they lived (in southeastern Kentucky, along the West Virginia border) called the Hatfield McCoy Marathon. Intrigued, I finally took the bait and attempted the race in 2008. I ended up with severe cramps in my calves and bailed at mile 21 (the first and only DNF of my running career). I returned in 2009 to redeem myself and completed the race. After a few years away, the bug got to me again and we really started to make a family affair of it, both in terms of having a cheering section and getting Christine the and kids to join in: 2013, 2017, 2018 (w/ EGB), 2019, 2021, 2022 (River Road Half w/ Christine, Ian, & Claire), and 2025 (w/ Ian).

This past weekend, Ian and I returned to suburban Williamson (along with a cheering section), WV to again take on the Hatfield McCoy Marathon. Even though we don’t have family that live in the area anymore, the running community that gathers every year to host, organize, and participate in the race feels like family. I’ve said it before, but the Hatfield McCoy Marathon is the friendliest and most hospitable race I’ve ever been a part of. You aren’t just a bib number. You are an individual who is welcomed embraced by the community, whether you finish sub-three hours or plus-ten. It’s a fantastic running opportunity, and to be able to experience it with my family has made it all the more special.

As for the race, my goal was to finish (which I did). I also finished in under five hours (bonus) and claimed third place in my age group (super bonus). Massive thanks (again) to @batausa83 , @selena_the_other_wonder_woman , the TVRRC, and all the other organizers, volunteers, and support personnel. I love this race. Pencil me back in for 2027. ❤️
