It was little things. Things that were probably only evident to me. Things like the fact that my team jersey had to be specially ordered, or that the jersey itself was a slightly different texture and color than everyone else’s. The early nineties were not a time of body inclusion. So when it came to ordering plus-size jerseys for high school sports, options were limited. Limited to things like my best friend’s mom sewing a panel in my cheerleading skirt.

These small things are the reason why I’ve often felt on the outside when it comes to exercise. This feeling was reinforced by the fact that until a few years ago, I could only find my size athletic wear online or at one or two plus-size stores in the mall. I always felt like I wouldn’t belong until I was smaller. There was a pay-to-play feel to fitness, and the price was weight loss.

My choice of exercise became walking, especially during the pandemic. I could walk with the best of them. I could walk like an Egyptian. I could do the walk, the walk on by, and sometimes I would wear special boots that were in fact made for walking. You named it, I could walk it.

After months of walking, I wondered if I could run. I mean, I wouldn’t be a real runner. That was for that elite group of people who could find their sizes on the rack at Target. But maybe I could sneak a few steps in when no one was looking.

When I would mention to people that I was thinking about running, I was often told by well-meaning folks that it would be awful on my knees or that I would get plantar fasciitis. Advice like, “Running isn’t actually healthy for a girl your size.” or “Walking is just as good of an exercise, if not better.”

But I wanted to run not just because it was the “best exercise”; I wanted to run because I wanted to run. I wanted to cover miles. I wanted freedom in my feet. I was about to discover there was a whole other side to running with people who believed just that.

I teach a mother-daughter Bible study out of my home. We're talking about God's word being a lamp unto our feet. So we made a list of specific lights for specific situations. Enjoy. 😊 by @runpluswrite
