« My first encounter with the Americas Cup sneakers would of been late 2000/2001 when we moved back to London from NYC. I asked one of my fly female friends what the trappers were wearing on road now and she said Prada. So I copped a brown long over coat, matching bucket hat and a pair of strapped ones early. The American cup design landed later on
This pair reminds me of a era in London. When super brands was regular uniform for men and women on the roadside and in dances
My first pair of American Cups were burgundy
I had atleast 5 pairs in every colour I liked, the boots too
At first they were more expensive. Soon as the price dropped and everyone was buying them like Nike’s... I said in a song “And I sweeeaar, I’m never wearing Pradas again, next season you gonna see me in Escada for men!” ... after that song blew... ALOT of people stopped wearing ‘em... it was a similar effect to when Hov said “we don’t drive X5’s we give em to baby mommas”... I had to throw out every pair LOL
Plenty of UK artists coz it was and kinda still is a staple here. Whole €urogang had em on till I dropped that line! LOL
For the anecdote Me, Mega and our right hand Daffa had em on when we met the Dipset and they were looking at us like some fly young niggas, especially coz I had on the coat and bucket too and Mega had on his Fendi trench coat and matching bucket with his brown and black Prada sneaks (the ones before American cup)
I have no idea for the future of this prada we put em down in ‘03, but I’ve seen some wild new Prada designs lately that look intriguing... and just coz I’m the reason a lot of people stopped wearing American Cups in UK, I defo ain’t getting away with wearing them again but maybe another design?
