Hi, I’m Aayushi and this is Runway Recess.

A space where fashion steps off the runway for a moment and reconnects with the real creative process.

@runwayrecess is my personal styling and photography lab built around one idea: great fashion doesn’t just exist on the runway, it grows in the pockets of curiosity, experimentation and everyday inspiration. This is where I shape my visual identity, develop concepts and refine the kind of work I want to be known for.

Here you'll see BTS, industry insights, creative trials and everything that fuels my practice. Basically, the productive kind of recess.

Currently based in Mumbai and open to collaborations, styling assignments, fashion photography & creative direction opportunities. taken in Bandra West by @runwayrecess

ā€˜Nure-onna’

This shoot was developed by limiting what is shown. Framing, posture and distance were used to slow how the body is read, avoiding immediate legibility or overt display. The photograph resists excess, asking the viewer to stay with the image rather than move through it quickly.

The photographic approach remains controlled and precise. A reduced palette and uninterrupted silhouette keep attention on surface, proximity and tension within the frame. Visibility is treated as a decision rather than a given, allowing the body to exist as presence instead of spectacle.

The styling, developed separately, draws inspiration from Nure-onna, a figure from Japanese folklore associated with seduction and deception, appearing soft while carrying threat. That reference functions as a conceptual undercurrent, supporting the image’s interest in attraction, control and delayed recognition.

'Playdate'

Playdate is a self portrait about growing up without fully letting go. The soft toy stands for comfort, habit and the parts of childhood that stay present even as everything else changes. Holding it feels natural rather than symbolic, like something learned early and never questioned.

The black and white removes distraction and keeps the focus on expression and contrast. A playful element sits beside a composed figure, creating a quiet tension between familiarity and adulthood. The distance in the gaze suggests awareness rather than nostalgia.

This work is not about returning to childhood. It is about carrying it forward. The image acknowledges that maturity does not erase earlier attachments, it simply reframes them.

Playdate sits in that overlap, where innocence and control exist at the same time.

Minimalism is over. 2026 will be messy, bold and unapologetically playful. From electric blue lids to whimsical deer prints, undone hair and asymmetrical necklines, fashion will celebrate controlled chaos like never before. taken in Mumbai, India. by @runwayrecess

'Veil of Surface'

This look works with the idea of interruption. Pearls, often read as symbols of softness and polish, are positioned across the face to disrupt easy visibility. Rather than decorating the body, they create friction, slowing the gaze and resisting instant recognition.

The styling is intentionally controlled. The silhouette stays clean and uninterrupted so that the focus remains on placement and proportion. A reduced palette keeps the look grounded, allowing material and gesture to carry meaning without distraction.

The work is about precision. Every choice is deliberate, built around how the body is revealed, concealed and ultimately held in view.

Comfort zones are great. Creative growth is better.

Lately, I’ve been intentionally pushing past what feels safe, not because being ā€œbasicā€ is wrong, but because expression lives on the other side of predictability.

One of my professors @womenpow banned jeans and the colour black in class, not as a rule, but as a reset. When your defaults are taken away, you’re forced to think, to experiment, to show up differently. That shift stuck. This is me choosing curiosity over comfort and letting clothes do a little more talking. taken in Bandra West by @runwayrecess

#HauteTakesbyRR

Pantone has named 'Cloud Dancer' as its 2026 Colour of the Year and the timing feels questionable.

With fashion leaning back into drama, texture personality and expression, this choice feels more reactive than visionary.

'What The Body Remembers'

This look explores how memory is held in the body through form, posture and restraint. The handmade corset by @seam_.stressed becomes a quiet framework rather than a tool of control, grounding the silhouette with intention.

The Styling focuses on proportion and balance, pairing structured elements with softness to allow movement while maintaining composure.

Shot in old Pune, the aged architecture and stillness of the space echo the concept of memory, reinforcing how fashion absorbs time, place and experience.

This story reflects my interest in styling as an act of listening, to the body, the garment and the space they inhabit.
