Stuck in your head the moment a fight scene starts? You’re not the only one.

Last week at The New Actors Centre, two things came up. One actor had a fight scene on a high-end show and was anxious about letting go. Another said that as soon as combat comes into a scene, she’s counting moves instead of playing the character.
That’s what we work on. Getting the technique into your body so you can stop thinking and start playing.

Your fight scene doesn't look fake because of the choreography. It's your body.

When someone comes at you for real, adrenaline takes over. Breath goes high. Hands shake. Fine motor skills go. Most actors play the punch, and never play that.

Before you learn the moves, ask three questions. The psychology, not just the punch.

It looks fake because the moves were learned, but never understood. If you act, direct, write or make anything with a fight in it, this is for you.

We teach real mixed martial arts to performers and creatives. Understand it first, then do the moves. Train with a community that works hard together.

Claire is an actor and writer based in London. Her credits span stage work at Southwark Playhouse and The Bunker (where she also co-produced), plus voiceover work across animation and factual film.
Claire is also an ambassador for NO MORE, supporting their work to end domestic and sexual violence — which makes her perspective on training that engages seriously with the psychology of violence especially meaningful to us.
