@cherrysmythpoet, poet, writer and art critic reviewed Pathways at Showcase 26 UEL, eloquently teasing out details and undercurrents. Huge thanks to Cherry Smyth: 'When is a gap a glitch and when is it an edge that the eye connects to another edge? In RW’s lively, bold paintings, conversations rove across sequences and broken sequences to suggest the starts and stops of journeys. In richly underpainted abstraction, portals or spyholes appear as lost or half remembered places that take on the energy of the new. Roads & roundabouts lead the gaze up the wall, while meandering lines walk us through landscapes of scraped back gestures. Reminiscent of de Kooning, Sigmar Polke and Amy Sillman, RW shows an exciting elasticity of thought and feeling as he navigates space, real & imaginary.' #pathways #tracks #line #walking #expandedpainting by @rupertwhale

Chance Encounters @thestonespace 6 Church Lane Leytonstone E11 1HG 19 March - 5 April PV Friday 20th March 6.30 - 8.30 Pleased to be reprising some older work along with the new 2020-2026. Walk series 2026 acrylic, charcoal on hessian 200 x 60 cm Portal series 2020 acrylic on wood 30 x 30 cm Tangents series 2022 acrylic on canvas/wood The paintings on show are from three periods. The Tangents (2022) series arose from my thinking about the extent to which chance intervened in our intentions in determining outcomes. In these formulaic geometric paintings lines cross the picture plane, appearing to intersect circles by accident, creating illusory spaces, different worlds. The earlier Portal series (2020) only allows viewers one perspective of a place, singular and restricted. Counter to these hard-edge paintings is the recent, looser Walk series (2026). In these I map out imaginary local rambles recording physical and emotional responses with the sights, sounds and activities of s suburbia and the opening, natural habitat of the common. #paintings #place #walking #London by @rupertwhale
