Speaking of exceptional regional creatives…are you familiar with photographer @nic_duncan_photographer

We’ve had the delight of knowing and working with Nic for some time and the incredible people and stories she captures through her lens are always a source of inspiration and truly move us when they come through our feed. We’re highlighting her and one of her recent collaborations here so you can also appreciate the stories and people she shares.

Pictured here is Aunty Eliza from the upcoming exhibition - Binalup, Menang | First Light, First People, a portrait exhibition that is a Menang-led collaboration between Elders and Nic.

Running from 26 June – 26 July, at the Albany Town Hall, the exhibition features a series of 29 portraits of Elders and other key Menang people, shining a light on their contributions to the Menang community and the wider Albany community.

We’ve taken the below from the City of Albany website and we’ll share a link to the dates and times of the exhibition in our story.

Menang Elder, Aunty Carol Pettersen says the project ā€œhighlights the contributions of our First Nations people in shaping the community we have today, telling our story in a way that builds pride and confidence in our youth while fostering mutual respect and collaboration.ā€ Uncle Lester Coyne adds, ā€œMany of our Elders are ā€˜quiet achievers,’ so this is a wonderful way to recognise them publicly.ā€

This meaningful project will leave a lasting legacy, ensuring the images and stories of the Menang people are recognised, celebrated, and shared with future generations. by @ruralroom

If you’ve followed for a while you’ll know that one of our primary goals is to highlight and celebrate regional creative talent, and to make regional creatives discoverable so they can get greater access to professional opportunities.

This story highlighting the incredible @briannaj0nes - day to day farmer, and aspiring film maker, is the perfect example of everything we stand for!

We’re regularly contacted by people all over the world if they need to find a creative in the most faraway of places in regional Australia and I can honestly say that there’s only been a couple of instances where we couldn’t find a local creative to suit the purpose they needed. Exceptional creative talent literally exists all over regional Australia.

If you’re crewing professional creative projects - from major films, to advertising campaigns to brand shoots, theatre shows…and everything in between…please look locally before you haul in a team of entirely city based creatives. Especially when there’s government funding involved, it’s super important to make sure that funding actually benefits the people that live in these communities long term. Implanting creative legacy is not only valuable for the people that remain in that community, but also because the talent you’ll discover have so much magic to contribute to the broader national story telling landscape ongoing!

Don’t assume they’re not there, or they’re not experienced/skilled enough. It’s simply not true…you just haven’t met them yet but when you find them you’ll be glad you looked! šŸ˜‰āœØ

Mother’s Day has been getting a bitta airtime of late. So. A little post to add to the mother love.

These gorgeous pics were taken by the ridiculously talented Clancy Paine @clancypaine (capturer of magic + mother) at a very special convergence of creatives at @rovenumby ✨

The adventure was designed and brought together by a coupla brilliant powerhouses led by Grace Brennan @buyfromthebush and Georgie Robertson @regional_pr_co ā¤ļø

For me, this gathering came at a really unique time…it was the first time I’d been away solo from my two little girls, and I also knew it would be the end of my feeding journey as my 18 month old was weaning and being away for a few days was going to be the full stop at the end of that experience….a bittersweet milestone.

As I travelled across the Nullarbor to Numby and back, I went through all manner of emotions - from an unfamiliar sense of freedom (oh my god I can use both my hands!!), to an uncomfortable sense of grief, guilt and shame, underpinned by the most splendid sense of joy in connecting face to face with a group of unbelievable creative women I’d admired from afar for years. I hadn’t realised quite how isolated, lonely and overwhelmed I’d felt in the early years of motherhood until this moment…I was like a little puppy bursting with energy, overflowing with chatter, bubbling frivolously like the creeks we crossed.

There’s a certain chemistry that crackles when you’re among fellow creatives and artists in person….inspiring, rejuvenating and replenishing, something I really needed. It was also fantastic to share in conversations of motherhood and managing artistic dreams alongside the things we do as mums. This continues to fascinate and perplex me.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Artist – De-Anne Strange
De-Anne Strange is a contemporary Australian artist and designer based on her family’s agricultural farm in Bruce Rock, in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia, where she lives with her husband and three sons. Deeply connected to country, her work is inspired by the light, movement and quiet strength of the natural landscape that surrounds her.

With a background in Visual Arts, professional photography and textile design, and over 25 years of creative experience, De-Anne brings a refined eye for composition, colour and detail into her multidisciplinary practice. Her work combines hand painting, drawing, photography and digital techniques to create layered, intuitive pieces that feel both grounded and elevated.

Drawing on native flora, organic textures and the ever changing environment of rural life, her designs are created to bring a sense of calm, beauty and connection into everyday spaces. Alongside her original artworks, De-Anne creates collections for textiles, wallpaper and homewares, with work licensed and collected both in Australia and internationally.

Passionate about both creativity and rural life, she is committed to sharing the beauty of regional Australia while encouraging others to reconnect with their own creativity and do what they love. https://de-annestrange.com.au/ https://www.facebook.com/deannestrangedesign/ https://www.instagram.com/deannestrangedesign/ by @ruralroom

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Frances lives on a working property in the Riverina with her husband and three children, where life is shaped by sheep, cropping cycles, and the occasional mob of steers. The rhythms of the land underpin their days, with each season bringing its own demands and rewards.

Through her photography, Frances documents the unfiltered reality of farm life, capturing both its quiet, in-between moments and its more demanding edges. Storytelling is central to her practice, with each image offering a glimpse into the lived experience of rural Australia. Alongside this, she works as a wedding and family photographer across Albury and the surrounding region, preserving personal stories with the same care and attention.

Her work seeks to provide an honest window into the labour and resilience behind food production. Farming, as she reflects, is grounded in practicality, adaptability, and a depth of knowledge that often goes unseen. It is a life that continues regardless of the challenges, sustained by determination and connection to place.

For Frances and her family, the farm is also a place of learning and perspective. It offers her children a childhood rich in space, nature, and opportunity, something she gently reminds them is both rare and valuable.

Her work can be followed on Instagram at @francesterlich365. by @ruralroom

Our next Vixen Feature Profile is Bec Bignell!

Bec lives in a coastal town south of Perth on Bindjareb Noongar Boodja and is a filmmaker who directs, writes and produces.

She says, "I also find it hard to accept that existing in this industry is a ā€˜cross your fingers’ thing, especially given the significant time invested in pitching, development and many other unpaid activities…the reality of holistically managing everything required to participate in line with trying to sustain a production company and family is overwhelming, so rather than waiting for permission I try to focus on how I can draw on my skillset and collaborative networks to keep creating resourcefully from where I live."

What does your trip to work look like?

From the west coast to the east coast, this is what our trip to work looks like.

No highways humming with traffic, no crowded platforms or rushing crowds. Instead, it’s dusty tracks, open skies, and paddocks stretching as far as the eye can see. The kind of commute where the light changes everything, soft morning haze giving way to sharp, golden sun, and the land quietly waking alongside you.

Out here, the journey to work isn’t something to endure, it’s something to notice. A mob of cattle shifting in the distance, a lone tree standing strong against the horizon, the rhythm of country life unfolding in its own time.

It’s a reminder that no matter where you are in Australia, the road to work tells a story. This one just happens to be written in red dirt, wide skies, and a slower, steadier pace.

Why not share your trip to work with us Rural Room #storiesfromthesticks

Winding through trees, in the country breeze…the best way to start a week.

We’re in a time where we are totally overwhelmed by things - physical stuff, content, ideas, things to do…it feels harder to tap out than tap in, but lately I’ve been reminded how beneficial simplicity really is.

If you’re drowning in list items, a pile of physical stuff or a mountain of ideas that you don’t know how to action consider this post your reassurance that it’s ok to stop, take a breath, look around and just exist within the place you’re in.

What are some of the simple things that bring you pleasure? šŸ’« by @ruralroom

Six years of Galah Magazine, Fourteen amazing editions. Wow! 🤩

Six years of telling authentic stories from regional Australia, of celebrating the beauty, resilience and creativity that lives far beyond the city limits.

For those of us connected to the Rural Room community, it has been incredibly special to watch this magazine grow. Along the way, several creatives with ties to Rural Room, working as media stringers, have even had the honour of seeing their work selected for the front cover of this remarkable publication. That’s something we’re immensely proud of.

A heartfelt congratulations to Annabelle Hickson for the vision, courage and dedication it took to create something so meaningful. Through Galah, she has championed regional voices and given space to stories that might otherwise have gone unheard.

As this next chapter begins, we simply want to say thank you and acknowledge what an extraordinary achievement these past six years have been.

The final issue of Galah with Annabelle at the editorial helm is now available for pre-order. We can’t wait to see what comes next.
