Ladder for Sister April Baxter

Maple, fiber splint

11'-6" H x 18" W x 16" D

I'm spending the summer up at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, not too far from the Sabbathday Lake Shaker settlement, home to the last three living Shakers. Until Sister April Baxter joined in 2025, there were only two.

This chair is about a lot of things: precarity, aspiration, tradition, and the influence tools have on our work. The finials are in the shape traditional to Sabbathday Lake chairs, and the tilters at the foot allow the chair to lean back just as the Shakers would have done it. There are twenty-seven rungs in total, and the seat is hand-woven in fiber splint.

I owe thanks to many people for this one. Most importantly to @woodschoolmaine for having me, @libbyschrumdesign representing a long tradition of tall chairs, @marcusdimaggio @alex.montesano.art @beatriz.zuazo @process_margotecke @lesliewebbdesign @gabrieletise.wood my fellow Fellows, and @ykcurio who steers our corner of the ship. taken in Center for Furniture Craftsmanship by @russ_fogle

Maple, black dyed maple veneer, cotton tape

17.75" W x 15.5" D x 36" H

On January 2, 2017 at 1:35pm, Shaker elder Sister Frances Carr passed away. Only two living Shakers remained.

This chair is built in the style of a traditional Shaker ladderback, with inlaid wireframe ornamentation made through lamination and string inlay of black-dyed maple veneer. The wireframe calls out every edge, intersection, and centerline of the volume. In true Shaker style, the back legs are 3/4" shorter than the front. A modest concession to comfort. by @russ_fogle

Industrial Ritual

ER308L stainless steel, refractory ceramic

6" H x 6" W x 5" D

I used to work in factories. Back then, every time I started up a new machine I would say a little prayer. These days, it's a prayer for the kiln, or maybe the router. There's a logic to machines; it's a logic so dense as to approach mysticism. You can spend your whole life studying machines and still come away with more questions than you started with.

I picked welding back up not too long ago and I found myself lost in the meditation of it. I remembered seeing welded trees of filler rod back in school, which I couldn't pull off at the time. I said a little prayer and started going up.

Coil-building is our oldest clay tradition; the first clay vessels were coil-lined baskets. Today we have 3d printers coil-building for us. This tea set is coil-built in ER308L stainless steel. It happens to be food-safe, pleasantly heavy, with enough mass to bring the tea to a nice drinking temperature. It's modeled after a traditional gaiwan tea set. The spout is polished; it pours well. It's black from heat. It may have been dug straight from the earth.

Building it, I felt a little closer to the mysticism of the machine. Despite our technology, we're not as removed from the world as we think. I'd like for everyone to have a bit of that in their home.

Big thanks to @paraphernalia.exhibition @jessfugler and @axelsey for bringing this to New York. Paraphernalia is open 11-6 through May 18, and then by appointment through the 29th, at 144 Vanderbilt, Brooklyn. by @russ_fogle

Twenty-Two Minutes

Aluminum 6061-T6511

6" L x 1.4" W x 1.2" H

Dad would always say the most important thing in life is balance

A small weight holds a stick of Japanese incense, delicately balanced above a shallow machined groove

Each stick burns for twenty-two minutes, more or less. Long enough to do a crossword, practice piano for a bit, or just sit and think

Made for Up In Smoke at @lichennyc

2025 is the year of letting materials and processes be themselves.

For a long time I've been trying to force imperfect & organic shapes out of computers. Still am. It's not their strong suit.

You know what's full of imperfection? The hand-drawn line. People altogether, really. Embrace it.

This piano stand was made entirely by hand-drawn line. I think it's the ugliest and best thing I did all year. by @russ_fogle

I like to think of myself as an easygoing person, so it was hard to look back on 2024 and remember being racked with anxiety, uncertain about my future, completely creatively blocked the first four months of the year. I got hardly anything done between January and April.

The rest of the year has been a wonderful time full of hard work & growth & things that I'm proud of. I have my friends to thank for getting me through, so I wanted to take a minute at the start of the new year to shout a few out:

@shawnkirsch for reliable creative critique and ritual burnings

@matthewabadi and @gosamilee both for incredible opportunities this year and for the chance to just get away when I need it

@noah_bm for giving me a literal shoulder to cry on at least twice

@kameronburk for being the voice of creative potential

@okayjeffrey @allthingsmeng and @jeffreysincich for being the most patient yet encouraging studiomates a guy could ask for

@lilianaguimaraes for being the best & least expected thing to happen to me this year

I have a lot of work to catch up on & share, plus more coming for 2025. Happy New Year ❤️ by @russ_fogle
