July marks 20 years since returning from deployment and 20 years since becoming a fly fisherman. A rapid transition from putting 155mm artillery on target to dropping tiny dries on sipping trout is jarring and it took months to feel at ease outdoors. But cliches of finding solace on the water are true and for me was the first place I allowed myself to reflect on the year just spent down range. Fishing alone won’t reconcile the inner turmoil, but it helps. Two decades on my mind still wanders, mostly to the ones who never returned and how young Americans are again being sent to fight in foreign lands. I found no great truths from my experience, mostly dumb luck and senseless loss of life. But in the midst of that hate, I also experienced and witnessed acts of great compassion and courage. Those displays of humanity in the worst situations are what gives me hope for a better future despite our ongoing conflicts. War is dumb. Fight less, fish more 👍 by @rustelbuccet
