⚡️ New Music Friday: We currently find ourselves in the Year of the Horse, the seventh sign of a 12-year cycle in the Chinese Zodiac calendar. Specifically designated as a “Fire Horse” year, the time is marked by high energy, independence, and strong momentum. And those elements could also be used to describe the new album from The Rupert Selection.

The Boston alt-rock psych trio’s latest record, Music For Horses, is out now, fueled by explosive brass n’ riffs single “Riddance.” The vinyl pre-order launches today on Bandcamp Friday.

Recorded with Steve Lord at Rusty’s Recording Studio, the album arrives amidst a flurry of benefit shows and fundraisers for the band’s co-founder and creative leader, vocalist and guitarist Reilly Somach, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer over the summer.

“Music For Horses” was originally slated for release either later this fall or sometime in the spring, but Somach’s diagnosis sparked the band into action. With newfound energy, independence, and momentum, Somach calls the album “fun, weird, and colorful,” marking The Rupert Selection record he’s always wanted to make with the classic original lineup.

We have a piano now! Made in the UK in the early 1960s this Bentley has charm for days. Small but mighty. Ask me and @benvosk ‘s backs…

Speaking of pianos, anyone know a piano tuner?🕵️

Been making music with these two for about 30 years. Amazingly, Mike still fits in the Atari shirt. by @rustysrecordingstudio

After moving some (more) gear around the fully restored 1964 Farfisa Compact Duo now lives in the studio over in amp world. T’was a long journey from @benvosk rescuing it from @living_phantoms trash, to the infamous gear guru Jacob ever so graciously bringing it back to life, then going back into storage purely because of space limitations. That bummed me out. Jacob spent hours/days/weeks combing through every.single.board in this thing. Every board (and there are A LOT), every capacitor, transistor, mouse carcass, etc. It even has its own dedicated built in pre amp now with inserts, bass outs, etc. No external box needed. Yes, I know there are plugins that emulate this exact thing but it can’t emulate the smell of circuits warming up (yet). It’s a beautiful thing. Come try it out for yourself. #farfisa #restoration #therealthing #musicstudio #vintagegear by @rustysrecordingstudio

You can now listen to The Acquisition of All Things.

This album means a lot to me. It's the first time I got to record in a studio with a band, so huge thanks to @colegroovy @david_greiff and @aaronmatthewband for the experience at @rustysrecordingstudio

The collection of songs in TAOAT all serve the same themes: things are broken, but it isn't that complicated to fix them.

This isn't angry music, and it isn't sad music. It's a personal soundtrack to finally finding the words for what I've been feeling for years. The arrangements are deliberate and stripped back, so what you hear on the record is how it sounds played live by four people.

And now I can't wait to do my favorite thing in the world: spend time with my favorite people and get ready to play through the whole album at @theburrenbar @burrenbackroomseries with the band and amazing @jason.oberstein opening the night.

I'll do deep dives into each song in the coming weeks but for now I'm just gonna enjoy this beautiful day
