when i moved to dc, it quickly felt familiar. i saw people who looked like me taking up space in all parts of society, something that reminded me of home back in botswana. but even in the few years i lived there, i began to notice pockets of what was buried in what it was quickly becoming.gentrification feels like something that we gloss over and have been desensitized to, and that is where the real danger lies. cracked shells is a documentary chronicling the experiences of longtime black residents in dc who have lived and are living through this transformation. this film would be nothing without the community behind it. i’m deeply grateful to everyone who has poured into it, especially my incredible crew who’ve held it down for the past year.i can’t wait to share more, cracked shells coming soon.director: @ruth.tedla producers: @ruth.tedla @8i5am dp: @viewsofjay @righteously__ editors: @viewsofjay @ruth.tedla colorists: @viewsofjay @blay.mw composer: @laddcarlo sound engineer: @cyning_cam production assistants: @nic.nowlin @meerafmesfin by @ruth.tedla

heart is still beaming from the dc screening of ‘cracked shells’. grateful to have gotten to this moment as this process truly pushed my limits and deepened my purpose. while this film is rooted in dc, it tells a story that echoes in cities everywhere. often times, cities are built on the backs of the communities that belong to them and the support this film received is a beautiful reminder that they will not be erased.thank you to everyone who has given their time, gifts, and care to this project. i am forever grateful. above all, i’m thankful to God for planting the seed and for watering and nourishing it long before any of us knew.panel moderated by @begaiprom dress by @meronstudio floral arrangements by @hekscode by @ruth.tedla
