The Distress Signals Project reminded me what live performance is all about.
I have been lacking a feeling of purpose in my art. Sitting alone on my computer, collaborating from a distance. Here, we are actually looking people in the face, promising to hold eachother up, feeling together, praying together, laughing together. In performance, we invite the conversation by presenting the raw, the vulnerable, the disaster. We may walk through different sides of this world, but what we want changed, we must face. These spaces, these artistic spaces, are the way to safely face the most difficult and heartbreaking experiences, and ignite a chain reaction of conversation and perspective.
Under that playhouse roof, a little piece of humanity began its restoration. Now we open our hearts and we grow.

We did it we did it!!

In 4 years:
I laughed the hardest I’ve ever laughed.
I cried the hardest I’ve ever cried.
I realized music isn’t just a hobby.
I cooked soup.
I yelled at DaVinci Resolve and ProTools.
I made lifelong friends.
I made thousands of coffees for sleep deprived students.
I played Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.
I found love for bowling, frisbee, and handstands.
I finally cut my hair.
I gained confidence.
I didn’t stretch enough.
I made good decisions.
I made mistakes.
And I learned I’m still scared of the real world.

Do I feel ready? No. Am I excited about it? Why, yes!
Never stop cruising life. Never stop feeling like a gremlin.

This semester I completed my senior thesis film. Did I think I would be in a directorial position again? No. In fact, I was extremely hesitant to pitch an idea in August. I didn’t know if this film was even feasible given our resources and limited time to create it. But somehow, it happened. Three shooting days, six locations, seven dogs on camera. So much went right, and it is all thanks to the cast and crew that agreed to tackle this insane project with me. Thank you all. This film is exactly what I dreamed it would be and so much more. Hey, I Found Your Dog. is unapologetic, fully saturated with personality, style, and humor - exactly what it was meant to be.
Thank you to those of you who believed in this film, even more than I did at times. This was a lot of words to say, but one word that can sum all of this up is “proud”.
