Jane Hammond spoke to PCNY members about how the print she produced for us was made. Here’s some of what we learned….

To start, three different digital prints were created: the maps, the moths and the moth antennae. The digital prints were made by Matthew Dine after Jane created protoypes for each with the help of Jeffrey Scott French. She then added several graphic elements to an existing vintage map of Australia: the thin black outer border, the ornate inner border scroll pattern, and the cartouches in the four corners which hold her signature, the date and the edition number.

The moths’ form was cut out with scissors. The now-exposed white edges were painted umber, ochre and sienna to blend the moth’s edges with the body, which in effect gives a three-dimensionality to the form.

Small bullet-shaped lifts were crafted using archival foam core, wrapped in brown Japanese paper and adhered using methylcellulose. These shapes were used to create the three-dimensional body below the printed body that was adhered to it using Jade glue. This important nuance is visible when the print is viewed from the side.

The antennae were then cut out, crimped gen by @ruthlingen

What an amazing week for WVU Printmakers!

We were so lucky to have visiting printers Nina Dine and Ruth Lingen from @paceprints in the shop printing for visiting artist Gamaliel Rodriguez. In just four days, they printed roughly 47 two color monotype and litho prints! Nina and Ruth were so generous with their time, knowledge, and expertise. SO MUCH printmaking knowledge on one press! It was great to see Gama working on plexi and stone and hand coloring prints all in the span of just a few days. Everyone was also so generous letting students sponge, help with paper registration, and run the press.

A huge thank you goes out to Art Museum of WVU Director @aaronlevigarvey and WVU alum and Pace Prints President @pawnshopeyes for organizing all of this and making it happen!

Lots of printing, but also lots of laughs…which always means a good a time in the shop!

@ninardine , @ruthlingen , @gamaliel_artist …you are all welcome back anytime!

Last day to catch the amazing show "No Bodies: Clothing as Disruptor" at the Hudson River Museum just north of NYC. Beautifully curated by Alva Greenberg, with a wonderful catalog. I was thrilled to be in the same room as one of my art heroes, Chris Burden!

The 2 prints are from a set of 4 haikus by Reginald Dwayne Betts, using wood type on paper handmade from inmate sweat pants, edition of 4.

A real gem of a museum with the wonderful Red Grooms "Bookstore" installation, and of course Hudson River School painters! taken in Hudson River Museum by @ruthlingen
