My first goodreads review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!

Many thanks to Katie Gates for reading and reviewing AND recommending.

Here's what Katie said about Even the Birds:

"The writing and imagery are beautiful, and the characters are well-developed and complex. The pacing and plot moved along well, and I was interested in the story through the entire novel. I would recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction, as well as those wanting to learn more about Central American history through a fictional lens. This was 5 stars for me!"

Extra special book mail!

@shirleyhaywrites, who was shortlisted for the 2025 Guernica Prize for Literary Fiction (@guernicaeditions), sent me a copy of her debut novel Fault Lines as a thank you for reading it and providing this blurb:

"[A] rich and moving exploration of what becomes possible when we open ourselves to each other and what we lose when we don't."

One of the things I really admired about Shirley's writing was how smoothly she moved through the complexities of the protagonist's life and brought them all together for a very satisfying resolution.

Congratulations, Shirley!

Friend Mary Lou McRae has written a by turns hilarious, by turns heart-breaking memoir of her 40+ years as a nurse. A lot has changed in medicine and nursing since 1968, but compassion and care are the through lines in this remarkable story.

Look for it on Amazon or contact Mary Lou directly at heavenonearth4444@gmail.com

A fantastic afternoon of poetry by Kit Roffey (@poetry_kit), Sophia Cirignano (@8soap8 ?), Susan Gillis and @jenny_berkel, reading from their new chapbooks (@anstrutherpress @baselinepress). Poets and organizers graciously allowed me to join them for apres-reading nachos and beer and good conversation. Very grateful to all and to @andersoncraftales for the venue and decor. by @ruthtaylorwrites

Had a blast at the launch of my debut novel Even the Birds, celebrating with some of my favourite peeps. Loved hearing readings from the books of Tim Struthers, Darlene Madott, Bruce Meyer, and Crystal Hurdle, which launched as well. Heartfelt thanks to @guernicaeditions and publisher @michaelmirolla @marisaj7_ and @crystalfletch1 for making it all possible.

First bookstore sighting! I visited Oxford Book Shop and found Even the Birds looking out at me from between heavyweights Madeleine Thien and David Szalay (by coincidence, those two are next to each other on my bookshelf too). Had a lovely chat with owner Hilary Thomas, who let me know that she’s sold several copies of my novel and has ordered more. Oxford Book Shop has been going since 1948 and for many years was London’s only remaining independent bookstore (of new books). Very grateful to Hilary and her husband for giving Londoners a place to find their favourite reads.
