Hundreds attend a Town of Tonawanda Planning Board meeting in Kenmore, N.Y. last night, as they expressed vocal and at times boisterous opposition about a proposed data center on the site of the now closed Tonawanda Coke facility. Attendees spoke of the environmental damage created by the former coke plant, and a legacy of pollution endured by people in Western New York, rebuking the project as a return to problems created by past industries. As announcements for images selected and chosen for the American Photography Annual 42 (AP 42) have come out the past couple of weeks, I’m pleased to be included in the “CHOSEN” group with these two images, that being a part of 368 images out of 6,000 juried selections that make up the online archive. I join colleagues and others in this group, along with some who have been honored to appear in the hardcover book, being those “SELECTED” for that honor. Congratulations to my close colleagues and all. Captions follow.

…Young members of the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church who recently left Ukraine “guard” the Holy Shroud Saturday, April 19, 2025, as part of Easter weekend activities at the church in Johnson City, N.Y. This historic congregation, its founding dating back to about 1900 when the first Ukrainian immigrants in the area were young girls who worked in cigar factories, now supports about 100 families, some of whom have resettled in the US after fleeing the conflict as negotiations to end the war drag on.

“I just beg all of you guys to help me unite with my family,” Abdul Roshid said. “And if only my children were here, my grandchildren were here, I want to be able to talk with them. I would be able to stand this moment, this grieving moment with them, mourning with them, sharing my pain and sharing all the things I’m going through. The death of Nurul Amin Shah Alam last week, a Arakan Rohingya, refugee drew international attention and has sparked furor toward immigration authorities locally. After his family posted bail on Feb. 19, Alam, 56, mostly blind, was picked up at the Erie County Holding Center by U.S. Border Patrol and, after several hours, was dropped off at a Tim Hortons in Black Rock, several miles from his family’s home. He was found dead four days later in Downtown Buffalo, four miles from the drop off point.
Shah Alam, his wife, Fatimah Abdul Roshid, and two of their sons resettled as refugees in Buffalo. The family awaited the arrival of three older sons, married with children of their own in Malaysia, whose immigration paperwork had been approved to join the rest of the family. But they never made it as the border closed behind the family already here.

It was supposed to be an encouraging moment ahead of Shah Alam’s sentencing next month.
Recent events had shown promise: Shah Alam, previously indicted by a grand jury on three felony charges, had pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors, which, according to Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane, meant he would avoid deportation. Shah Alam’s local attorneys confirmed Thursday that Shah Alam’s family had been advised by an outside immigration attorney that it was safe to post bail.
The family waited for hours, said Imran Fazal, a local Rohingya community leader who for the last seven months navigated Shah Alam’s legal proceedings alongside the incarcerated refugee’s son, 22-year-old Faisal, and the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo.
Shah Alam never came out of the Holding Center to see his supporters. Unbeknownst to them, he had been released to federal agents hours before.
