👷🏻‍♀️🦺🪜🛠️🪚🦾 I thought it was about time to share what I got up to for my M.Arch thesis project. Note that these few photos cannot in the slightest capture all of the incredible memories made, lessons learned, and friendships formed; rather, they provide a glimpse into what I experienced during the last year of my graduate program.

I was fortunate enough to work with a group of 12 other amazing students. Together, we completed a design-build located in Boundary Bay. As a group we designed a pavilion for our client, and then we, the students, built the pavilion with our own hands.

Rhino and Grasshopper was used to create the geometry and script, which was translated so that the Kuka robotic arm could cut out individual pieces of processed wood. Many pieces also had to be hand-cut. Together, we sawed, screwed, sanded, painted, and nailed our pavilion together, piece by piece.

We excavated the site by hand, moved gravel by hand, built curved concrete formwork by hand, and erected large, heavy (and doubly-curved) wooden members by hand.

It was tough. We worked in the freezing rain. Our site flooded and we removed water, also by hand sometimes. Many of our design strategies initially did not work, and many hours of design thinking and labour sometimes felt like it was for nothing. But it all came together in the end through teamwork, and because of the extreme effort and care our two professors (James and AnnaLisa) invested into the project—and into us.

I am extremely proud of what we accomplished together, and am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in this project alongside such a wonderful, thoughtful, creative and intelligent group of people.

Thank you to my classmates and professors, who made this an experience of a lifetime!

My magnificent, splendiferous, hilarious, courageous, intelligent, passionate, empathetic, generous, creative bestie—a.k.a my little sis minga—has made it 30 years around the sun. And the sun has shone brighter for it. 🌞

There isn’t anyone in the world like you @shanais.fleur. Thank you for all that you give to, do for, and are to this world and the people in it in this moment in history.

Though you are more than capable of taking care of yourself, I will always be there to hug you, catch you before you fall, encourage you, and admire you.

I hope that adventure guides your 30s era and sees you create memories you never thought possible.
