Sometimes, a girl isn't lacking confidence. She's simply grown up in spaces where her voice was rarely heard.
Confidence grows when girls are encouraged to ask questions, share opinions, make decisions and know that what they have to say matters.

Apparently, being a girl comes with an instruction manual nobody can agree on. Fortunately, the twelve young women on the cover of Issue 54 of Raising Women Magazine missed it entirely. Our International Day of the Girl Child edition celebrates girls rewriting the rules, while reminding us that no girl should need extraordinary achievements to deserve ordinary opportunities.

Inside, we explore the expectations that complicate girlhood, the childhood wounds we carry into adulthood, the surprisingly busy history of the colour pink and a video game that lets you pay rent in Lagos. Because “because you’re a girl” might just be the best reason to dream without limits.
