Hwy 74 Milky Way- A few months ago I was hiking a trail in Palm Desert and thought to myself that it would be a cool photo to do a long exposure of cars driving on the mountain section of Hwy 74. I went home and started to do a little planning and noticed the Milky Way would line up in this photo as well. The Coachella Valley is in a pretty heavy light dome around bortle 6-7 so I didn’t have high hopes of a detailed sky but figured I’d try anyways…
A few days later I returned to the trail with my star tracker and captured these photos. It’s not the most detailed Milky Way photo due to the light pollution but being on the edge of the Coachella Valley’s light dome and aiming the camera away into dark skies towards Anza Borrego State Park made it possible.

Bighorn sheep enjoying the morning. They are amazing to watch traversing the steep, near-vertical mountain sides. The horn clashing echoes off of the canyon walls. All photos taken with a zoom lens from a distance.

Moonrise over Palm Desert 🌖

Wondering why the moon looks so large and not that way on phone photos?? Not “photoshop”… This is a compression effect when using a large zoom lens and objects spaced out far away in the frame. One of my favorite ways to photograph the moon.

What kind of tree gives the best high-fives?? A palm tree 🌴

Happy Easter! The Pink moon rising above the Cross Trail in Palm Desert…

I only had two days of possible moon alignments in April to capture this photo. The first one wasn’t possible due to high winds, dust and clouds blocking the distant horizon. The next evening conditions were perfect to capture the moon rise behind the cross with a beautiful view of Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley.

“Desert Twilight”

Blue hour melting into twilight in Joshua Tree NP… Pure magic for photography. The silhouettes, the crescent moon, and that last glow 🌙✨
