To my illustrious HBCU, Xavier University of Louisiana, thank you for all that you have given me. This moment is truly bittersweet. I still remember stepping onto this campus as an innocent, frightened 18-year-old, unprepared for the world but determined to make those 900 miles from home count. As a first-gen student, I came to set a new standard — and I did just that.

Xavier, you gave me more than just an education…you gave me a foundation. You gave me a village when mine was far away. You gave me professors who believed in me, even when I doubted myself. You gave me classmates who became sisters and brothers, and mentors who guided me with love, honesty, and accountability. In these four years, you’ve taught me how to lead, how to persevere, how to speak up, and how to heal. You saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet discovered in myself, and you nurtured it every step of the way. Every lesson, every late night, every challenge -all of it prepared me for the woman I have become.

Thank you for taking that 18-year-old girl by the hand and walking her gracefully into womanhood. I will forever love my HBCU…XU!

4 years of dedication and discipline. 12 years of dreaming. A lifetime of being That Girl.
To be first-gen. The first daughter. The first granddaughter. The first girl born into a lineage of men carried on the backbones of the women of our family. The first to constantly break down the barriers. I’ve never known what it meant to come second, and my education was no exception.

This journey wasn’t easy. I’ve faced doubt, detours, and discouragement. I’ve experienced loss — moments that shattered me and people I wish could be here to witness this. I’ve been told to pick another path, spent countless sleepless nights, shed tears, and studied until the final seconds before an exam. But through it all, I never let anyone or anything steer me away from the dream I planted at just ten years old.

To those who doubted me, tried to change me, or underestimated my vision — I didn’t just prove you wrong, I silenced the noise. I leave behind a legacy on Xavier’s campus, and I now step boldly into my next chapter: pursuing my Master’s at my #1 grad school, Agnes Scott College.

I leave you with this: Never let anyone who couldn’t walk a mile in your shoes try to direct your path. You will face obstacles but God has already equipped you for the journey. Lock in, stay disciplined, and chase what’s yours.
