The coffee date( that technically wasn’t a date) 😅 went so well that he asked me on an actual one.

And for the first time since we’d started talking… I finally gave that man an uncomplicated answer.

Absolutely.

We both knew we liked each other before we ever walked into that Starbucks. Meeting in person just confirmed it.
I still wouldn’t agree to be his girlfriend for another two months after this, I needed time to vet that he was who he said he was. It didn’t seem to bother him. I could move slowly. I could question everything. I could keep one hand on the door just in case and he never tried to rush me through any of it.

He just kept showing up as exactly who he’d been from the beginning.
And eventually, I ran out of reasons to be afraid of something that kept proving itself to be good.

Now we’re learning how to live together, blending a family, figuring each other out, and making plans for a future neither of us knew existed when we downloaded a dating app.

So…..that’s how we met!

But that was really only the beginning.

There was a first kiss I don’t think either of us will ever forget. Christmas will probably always make me think about IHOP and blueberry pancakes now. There are places I’ll never drive past the same way again. Songs that belong to very specific moments. And along the way, completely ordinary things started collecting stories of their own.

Turns out meeting him was only the first story.

How we became US is a whole different one.

The day had finally come! We were going to meet, for real!
He got there first.
I pulled up, put on my brave face, got out of my truck, walked over to him, shook his hand and said, “I think I know you.”

And then I watched a million things flash across his face before he managed to say a word.

You’d probably have to ask Ryan exactly what happened in his head when he saw me, but I watched about seven different emotions play across his face in half a second.
Shock. Panic. Appreciation. Mostly disbelief.
His eyes actually zinged. I don’t know how else to explain it. 😂

Whatever nerves I had before I got out of the truck started disappearing pretty quickly because this poor man could barely hold it together. He was stuttering. He was sweating. He was trying SO hard to be chill, but there was no chill to be found 😅
He’ll probably dispute some of these details.
He would be wrong. 😉

But I will tell you, sitting there in that Starbucks, something happened to me that I wasn’t expecting. I had never felt more wanted or beautiful in my life. And not because he spent the whole time telling me I was beautiful. The way he looked at me said so much without saying anything at all.
I don’t remember noticing anyone else in that coffee shop. I don’t remember wondering what time it was or thinking about my escape plan anymore. For someone who had spent weeks making sure I always had one, I suddenly didn’t want to leave.

I spent years with my nose buried in books, reading stories about people meeting someone and the whole world going a little blurry around them. I always thought that was just the pretty part writers added.

And then there I was.

In a Starbucks.

Living one.

It felt ridiculous. It felt a little impossible. And if I’m being completely truthful, it felt way too good to be true.

Then there was part six. 🤎

At this point we had officially graduated from “strangers from Facebook Dating” to “strangers who had thoroughly investigated each other on social media.”

And honestly, after a thorough stalking, I dug his vibe.

Everything he had told me checked out. He was a dad. A ring announcer. Liked boxing, his dog, his jeep. He USED to like hiking 😅😉
He got to see that I really was this very instagram-y woman making ridiculous reels with my girlfriends, always going somewhere, usually hiking, homeschooling- homesteading, and generally living a pretty full life. Somewhere in all that scrolling, stalking and talking, we had definitely sparked each other’s interest.

So eventually he did the obvious thing.

He asked me on a date.

And would you believe it… I said no. 😅

Not because I didn’t want to meet him. I did. I just wasn’t ready for a DATE date. A date felt like expectations. A date felt like I had agreed to something before I even knew how I felt standing next to the man.

Coffee, however, I could handle.

We chose Starbucks, where there are witnesses, multiple exits and absolutely no obligation to stay through dinner.

So we compromised.

Coffee.

And after all those weeks of talking, investigating, cautiously inching closer and me keeping one foot conveniently pointed toward the exit…the day finally came when we were going to meet in real life.

I was so nervous.

But that dude?

Oh, he was NERVOUS.

Okay, this is where I started getting really curious about him.
The first day we added each other on socials happened to be his birthday, and at some point during his birthday celebration, this man decides to send me a video of himself singing Neon Moon.

And I just remember being like… who is this guy?😂

He just wasn’t trying very hard to impress me. Or maybe he was 😅. Either way, it worked in his favor. He was a little awkward, kind of a clutz, completely himself, and for whatever reason, I really liked that.
I think this was the point where I went from “yeah, he seems like a nice guy” to actually wanting to know him. Like know him, know him.

I was still cautious, obviously. But I had also determined that if he did turn out to be a serial killer, he was clumsy enough that I could probably get away 🤷‍♀️😂

So things were looking up.

Everything is win when experience is the goal! 😅 This weekend I helped guide a 6 mile hike for a field herping expedition on one of the hottest most humid days of year. The recent rain caused the creek water to be mucky, the trail was washed out, covered in debris, creating harder hiking conditions for navigating through the water. Ryan and I also learned we apparently don’t have a great eye for rattlesnakes… because we were both just inches from stepping on one( of the many we came across 😳😅)
But then the fun really started.
My Truck broke down.
We ended up stranded at 2:30 in the afternoon—in front of a ranger station that was CLOSED, during the hottest part of the day and waited 2 hours for a tow truck, trying to share what little shade water we had.
( thank you mom for coming in clutch & assisting in our rescue)
We had to ride in MY truck as it was being towed (which is kinda sorta illegal 😅 ) It honestly felt like the Indiana Jones ride for well over an hour. We even put on the soundtrack because, at that point, we were fully committed to the bit.
When we stopped for fuel, we grabbed a couple of adult beverages because if you’re already riding in your truck while it’s on a tow truck… what’s one more questionable decision? 😂
Then, somewhere between being towed home and watching a monsoon roll across the Arizona desert, it hit me…
Some people would’ve called this the worst day ever.
I’ll probably remember it as one of my favorites.
Once into town we beelined it for pizza, looking like the kids at the end of Jurassic Park—sunburned, filthy, exhausted, and happier than we had any right to be. And yes… the first thing I ordered was chocolate cake. 😅
